NOTTS. Played at Lords on June 10 and 11. Middlesex won by an innings and 14 runs. A t the close o f the first day’s play in this m atch M iddlesex had a great advantage, thanks to the first- rate bowling o f i ’rott and the excellent batting of M r. Beldam and M r. M ore, the O xford University player. S m ething was w rong with the w icket at one end and all the batsm en had to fight for their runs, the only m an who made m uch o f thiugs on the N otts side being J. Gunn. M r. Beldam and M r. M ore put on 73 for the fifth wicket, m aking a stand at a most opportune tim e ; the form er was not out 61 when stumps were drawn, M iddlesex then leading b y a run w ith five wickets in hand. On Tuesday the m atch was finished. M r. Beldam continued to play an adm irable gam e w hile T rott played a cricketer’s innings, and the tail to a m an distinguished vhemselves. The result was a lead o f !74, so that N otts had very little chance o f com ing out o f the m atch w ith m uch credit to them selves. Again T rott was extrem ely successful w ith the ball, an had it not been for a delightful innings of 81 by Mr. A . O. Jones and a useful 35 by J. Gunn the score w ould have been exceed 'D gly small. A s it was M iddlesex gained a brilliant and unex pectedly easy victory. N o tts . First innings. Second innings. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MATGIH. EIGHTH OF THE TOUR. Played at Cambridge on June 10, 11 and 12. South Africans won by an innings and 215 runs. a r e m a r k a b l e t o t a l . T he South A frican cricketers have gradually been playing them selves in to form , and by the tim e that th -y arrived at C am bridge had becom e accustom ed to fast turf w ickets. It is all the m ore creditable to them that they have show n up bo w ell, for Mr. Sinclair, on w hom th ey relied so m uch has i een very unfortunate, for w h en , after a good m any failures, he seem ed to be getting in to his stride, he had to stand dow n ow ing to an in jury. The U niversity had put their strongest possible team in th e field, and although they cannot be said to have m ade m uch im pression on critics this season, it was little thought that by the end of the first day’s play against the 8outh Africans their bow ling w ould have been knocked in to a cocked hat, and that one of the biggest totals ever m ade in the course of a day in first class cricket w ould be posted up against them on th e scoring board. T here was n oth in g rem arkable at the com m encem ent of the innings o f the South Africans. T hree wickets were d ow n for a hundred, M r. Shalders being then out for an excellent innings of 67, his highest score du ring the tour. F or the next four hours Mr. H athorne played the m ost attractive cricket im aginable, com p letely m astering the C am bridge bow ling, w hich was as strong as it has been this year, or could be m ade Mr. H athorn received m uch assistance from Messrs. H alliw ell, Prince, and Reid, and w hen stum ps w ere drawn at 519 for 7 w ickets his ow n score was 203, and he was still not out. On Tuesday he increased his total to 239, his entire innings h iv in g lasted for five hours. It was a brilliant perform ance. A t the end of the innings Mr. C ooley, w ho was not out 18 overnight, hit b old lj' and scored 126 not out, his innings includ ing tw o h’s and fourteen 4’s. T he total of 692 by far the highest of the setson in first class cricket. In their attem pt to m ake a draw C am bridge began badly, losing Mr. Longm an and Mr. D ay, their tw o best batsm en, for 16 runs betw een them . T hey could not save the follow -on and were very easily b aten. S o u th A frican s . L .J . Tancreed, b D ow son ..............................17 W . ahalders, b H ind .. 69 A.
