1 9 8 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 1 3 , 1 9 0 1 . had done on the first. Thanks to som e fine cricket by M r. D ix on and Irem oDger, N otts were only 84 behind at the close o f their innings. T hey were doing very well indeed when Vine was given another trial with the ball, w ith the result that in five overs he took five w ickets w ith his fast leg-breaks for 13 run s. 8 0 far, Sussex were doing very w ell. B ut a surprise was in store for them w hen they began their second innings, for in the course o f forty m inutes before lunch they lost K illick, R elf, M r. G oldie and, above all, R anjitsinhji fo r 29 runs. T hus they were only 113 to the good, w ith all their best bats gone except M r. Fry, w ho had hardly been at his best this season. B ut it is exactly on such occasions as this, w hen things look about as black as they can be, that M r. F ry so often does a brilliant perform ance. "When the gam e was resumed, V ine becam e his partner, and no doubt realising that as long as M r. F ry kept g oin g runs w ould com e fast enough, he was content m erely to keep up his ow n w icket. F ry did n ot score at as rapid a rate as he has som etim es done on sim ilar occasions, but runs cam e quite quckly enough fo r the N otts m en, until the total was 105, when V ine w as out to H allam , having scored 16 out o f 77 in an hour and a quarter—a rem arkably useful innings. F ive wickets were now dow n, and it was n ot very long bef> re eight were dow n fo r 180, Fry still continuing to score at every possible opportunity. T ate helped him to increase the total by 64, and when the innings closed Sussex w ere leading by 338. T his very satisfactory state o f affairs was chiefly due to F ry’s splendid crick et; he carried his bat through the innings, w hich lasted fo r three hours and three qnarters. O ut o f the 243 runs from the bat he was responsible for no few er than 170, an altogether rem arkable proportion. The odds were now strongly in favour o f Sussex. B efore stum ps were drawn D ench and Irem onger m ade 8 w ithout loss for N otts, and on Saturday carried the total to 43. T* en once m ore a sudden change cam e over the gsm e, and W . Gunn, Shrewsbury, and M r. Jones all failed to m ake any runs to speak of, and uy lunch tim e five w ickets were dow n for 72. This practically decided the issue, and although the tail played up w ell, it was obvious that Sussex m ust w in easily. S ussex . F irst innings. C .B . F ry, c D ixon, b J . A t the close of the first day’s play in this m atch, Lancashire had such an advantage that their chanc s o f w inning were very considerable, for after scoriDg 201 they had got rid o f eight of their opponents for 110, thanks cbiefly to som e fine bow ling by Sharp. On Friday, Lancashire still further increased their advantage, and w hen their second innings was declared closed they were 524 runs on. The chief feature o f the day’s play was the brilliant batting of M r. Garnett, w ho scored 139 in tw o hours and twenty- five m inutes—his first hundred in county cricket. The tail also greatly distinguished itself. W ith such a lead M r. M acLaren wisely declared his inniDgs before stum ps were draw n in order to give his bowlers a chance o f dism issing one or tw o o f the Leicestershire m en, and so well did they perform tha* four wickets were dow n for 43. Leicestershire now had very little chance o f saving the gam e, and although M r. W ood on Saturday played a defensive innings of 59, which lasted fo r three hours, and although C oe and R . T. C raw ford played very fine cricket, they could not succeed in staving off defeat. L ancashire . First innings. Second innings. A . C.
