Cricket 1901

J u n e 6 , 1 9 0 1 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF T h E GAME. 1 6 7 LESSONS. [For Warwickshire v. Lancashire on Mon day and Tuesday, W . G. Quaife and Kinneir put on 327 runs in partnership for the third wicket. Sometimes they scored in a very leisurely manner.] Who is that, mother ? Kinneir, my child ! This morn he has just looked up and smiled, For he started with over a hundred runs, And, hy pegging away, making twos and ones, And a four now and then, he has got very near His two hundredth run—ah! the people cheer! Ever, my child, if you wish to please, Try, like Kinneir, to make twos and threes. Who is that, mother ? Willie Quaife, my son ! And that low, soft sigh, and the long drawn moan, Are flowing out from Maclaren’s breast; For, cautious and slow, Willie feathers his nest With a single or two in three overs or so, And a cautious pull when he has a go. Ever, my son, be like Willie Quaife, In batting as steady, as cautious and safe. W . A. B. G oldsmiths ’ I nstitute . Yorkshire won by an innings and 82 runs. On a w icket w hich although pretty easy was som ew hat soft the Yorkshirem en had th e good fortune to bat first, and did them selves am ple justice. T he chief feature of the innings was the excellent batting of M r. M itchell, w ho m ade his first hundred of the season, raising the total from 125 for four w ickets to 255 in partnership w ith H irst in an hour and thirty-five m inutes. It was a w holly satisfactory partnership from the point of view of a spectator. There were a few failures, but m ost o f the Yorkshirem en did w ell. T hey had com pleted an in nings o f 365 just before the tim e fordraw iug stum ps, naturally looked forw ard w ith pleasure to the probability of seeing B am pshire bat on an exceed in gly tricky w icket on the m orrow . Things turned out just as they w ere anticipated, and w hat chance had H am pshire against the fam ous Yorkshire bow ling on a queer w icket? M r. B ill uas playing finely when his career was cut short, tu t H irst and Rhodes had m atters nearly their own way. Things were better in the follow -on, and good cricket was played by several m en. H irst, Rhodes and H »igh did not meet w ith m uch success, but Yorkshire has a strong reserve, and W ainw right and Brown oid all that was required o f them . Y orkshire .
