Sussex won by an innings and 39 runs. It was a fine thing fo r Sussex to w in the toss in this m atch, fo r although at its comm encem ent runs were obtained with difficulty the wfcket steadily im proved all day. T hen follow ed rain fo r several hours in the evening, and Somerset were doom ed. The chief feature of the Sussex inniD gs was the brilliant batting of Ranjitsinhji, who, after his du ck’s egg on the previous day, was pretty sure to take it out oJ som ebody or other. H is batting was as near perfection as ever, and he was never in difficulties w ith the bow ling. H is innings o f 133 lasted for less than tw o hours, and included nineteen 4’s. M r. Fry and K illick had previously put on 96 for the first w icket in an hour and tw enty-five m inutes, the latter being m issed tw o or three times. M r. Goldie played another fine innings, and helped Ranjitsinhji to put on 140 in eighty m inutes, his share of the partnership being 56. A t the end o f the day bussex had ccm - pleted an innings for 376 runs, and Somerset had m ade 7 w ithout loss. A fter the heavy rain in the night no one was surprised that Somerset m ade a em ail score in their first innings. Braund and R obson both played good cricket. The side was m ade to follow on, and naturally did m uch better, but despite som e fine cricket by several, it was im possible to save the innings defeat. Tate m et with rem arkable success w ith the ball. S u sse x . C. B . F ry, c T yler, b C. D . Fisher,b Braund 87 Braund ..................... 43 C. L . A . Yorkshire won by an innings and 128 runs. Into the question o f whether N apoleon was right when he said that Providence was always ou the side o f the strongest battalions we do not wish to enter, but it is certain that luck nearly always favours the strongest county cricket teams. H ere were ihe Yorkshirem en batting under circum stances which, although they were not very favourable, were more in favour o f batsm en than o f bowlers, wheretis when Leicestershire went in they had about as m uch chance o f saving the inning’s defeat as o f winning the county cham pionship. On the first day Yorkshire, with some interruptions by rain, scored 264 for the loss of six wickets. Brown and Tunnicliffe putting on 72 for the first w icket by very good cricket indeed, and H irst makiDg som e brilliant hits in his innings of 61, which lasted an hour. Brown kept up his w icket steadily until ju st before stumps were d raw n ; alto gether his innings of 81 lasted fo r three hours and twenty minutes. On Friday the tail did w ell, and Leicestershire had a very form idable total to face. A gainst such a bowler as Rhodes, on a drying wicket they could o f course do very little, but W hitehead in both innings and Coe and Geeson in the second innings struggled hard against fate.
