Cricket 1901
J u n e 6, 1901. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 181 SURREY v, DERBYSHIRE. Played at Derby on May 30, 31, and June 1. Surrey won by five wickets. In this m atch, Derbyshire follow ed up their good form show n during the H am pshire m atch, and at certain stages they had m uch tbe best o f the gam e, a state o f affairs w hich was n ot a little due to the missed catches by their opponents. On Thursday, when stum ps were drawn, Surrey had a slight advantage, being 21 runs ahead, w ith a w icket in hand. There was no M r. Evershed in this m atch to get an exam ple to his side w hen Derbyshire w ent in, and, but fo r the fine play o f Bagshaw on a tricky wicket, things w ould have looked very bad indeed. As it w as, seven wickets were down for 89, but thanks o som e hard hitting by H ulm e, who put on 38 in tw enty-five m inutes, the total was brought to 140. Surrey began so badly as to point to a sudden change for the worse in the state of the w icket, A bel, Brockwell and H ayes only m aking five runs between them. M r. Craw ford, however, hit out boldly, and H ayward, w ho m et with a great share of good luck, kept up his w icket until stum ps were drawn. The tail collapsed. On Friday m orning the innings came to a conclusion in a few m inutes, H ayward carrying his bat for a m ost useful 74, m ade in two hours and a quarter. Derbyshire soon knocked off the balance, and as the Surrey m en could n ot hold the catches given by M r. W right and Bagshaw, the total had reached 86 in an hour and a quarter tefore the first w icket fell. Afterw ards, M r. W right continued to play beautiful cricket, as did Storer and Chatterton, with the result that at one tim e the score was nearly two hundred, with only three wickets dow n. Then against the bowling of L ockw ood and M r. Jephson there was a sad collapse, and Surrey, w ho could hardly have hoped to find them selves with less than about 350 to m ake, only required 204. O f these, 96 were scored w ith the loss of Brockw ell’s wicket before stum ps were drawn, A bel being not out 43, and H ayes not out 40, so that on Saturday, w ith nine wickets in hand, they had the easy task of scoring 108. A bel continued to play fine cricket, and although Hayes was out at once next m orning, M r. W alker and A bel added 60 runs in half-an-hour, by the end of which tim e victory was practically assured for Surrey. D e r b y s h ir e First innings. L . G. THE WARWICKSHIRE MATCH. FIFTH OF TH E TOUR. Played at Edgbaston on May 30 and 31. Warwickshire won by an innings and 69 runs. The South Africans are going through som e dis com forting experiences of our clim ate just at present. On Thursday last, at Edgbaston, they batted first on a w icket which had been very considerably affected by rain, and not being able to stay in long enough to give it tim e to im prove, were in a bad position at the end of the day. JKain fell after the innings was over, and w ith a w et ball the South A fricans could not do m uch. W hen stum ps were drawn, W arw ickshire had m ade 128 for the loss o f three wickets, and were leading by 54 runs. K inneir played an excellent innings. On Friday, W arw ickshire soon increased their lead, L illey hitting very hard, and with M r. Fishwick as a partner, putting on 70 runs in about half-an-hour. The South Africans had a balance of 204 runs against them w hen they w ent in a second tim e, and as the w icket was still in favour o f the bow lers, they had very little chance o f saving the inning’s defeat. M r. Tancred and M r. Bisset both played a m ost plucky up-hill gam e, but as the team has as yet had hardly time to $et used to changes in the wickets, it was not surprising that m ost o f them failed. The w icket at Old Trafford had not recovered its usual excellence by the tim e that this m atch began, and the fast bowlers m ade the ball get up considerably Under the circum stances it was a good perform ance o f Lancashire to score 185. The innings began and ended badly, but in the m iddle of it there was some really fine batting by Tyldesley, M r. Hartley, Mr. M acLaren and H allow s. I f M r. Bradley had been found difficult b y the Lancashire batsm en, 8harp was still m ore destructive when K ent went in, and no stand at all couM be m ade against him and W ebb. Each side had com pleted an innings by the end of the day, Lancashire leading by 109 runs. On Friday, M r. Bradley again cam e out w ith a very fine analysis, and at tim es it required some nerve to play him . Tyldesley again played adm irable cricket; his innings was interrupted by a blow in the face from a bum p ing ball, and the assistance of a doctor was necessary to put him right again. Hallow s and M r. M acLaren also for the second tim e in the m atch did exceedingly w ell. K ent were left to m ake 293 runs, w hich was a sheer im possibility. Sharp and W ebb again met with success, and no one was able to m ake any prolonged resistance to them . H a lf the side were out for 34 in less than three quarters o f an hour, but a com plete breakdow n was prevented by M r. M ason and M r. Baiss, w ho hit out boldly and put on 40 runs in a few minutes. L a n c a sh ir e , First innings. H . G . G arnett, c H uish, b M a so n .......................................
