Cricket 1901
M a y 23, 1901. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 very feeble ones. When he got hold of a ball it went to the boundary nearly always, without Riving the fieldsmen any temptation to move. But he was in difficulties time after time, and was frequently deceived by the pace of the ball. Never from the commencement of his innings to the erid did he give one the feeling thit he was likely to survive the i ext over. Tbe same might almost be said of Mr. Bisset. At times he seemed absolutely at a loss, at times he played the prettiest cricket. He also continually seemed on the point of getting out. But when all is said they neither of them got out, until when the total had been increased by 105 inabout an hour, and there seemed no particular reason why theyshouldnot play out time. Llewellyn played a ball hard to Braund atmid-offand ran, withtbeunfortunate result that his partner was run out. It was not a possible run to a good fieldsman, and the South Africans selected the wrong man. But it is highly probable that the same l it on tbeir own grounds would have easily been turned into a run ; they have yet to learn accurately the pace at which the ball travels on fast turf. It was a great pity that the partnership was broken in this way, for their batting was getting decidedly interesting. They might both of them reasonably offer as an excuse for their occasional weaknesses that the ball often got up in a very nasty way, and that they were at present unaccustomed to this sort of thing. Llewellyn was getting very near to his hundred when, in a moment of rashness, he rushed out wildly and was stumped for 88. Mr. Halliwell seemed to have settled down to play out time when heoverstepped the crease, and was given outstumped. If he thougnt that he was not out he would not have been very far wrong, for the ball came very slowly into the hands of the wicket-keeper, who took it some eighteen inches behind the wicket, while the batsman was very quickly inside his crease; and, indeed, he was there before the bails were off. But it was a nice point. The total was exactly 200 when stumps were drawn. Yesterday Mr. Hathora and the captain did well, the former making runs as quickly as he could in case of accidents to the tail, and thanks chiefly to him the score was increased by nearly a hundred before the innings came to an end. It was now the turn of th*i London County to play an up-hill game, but their opponents were very keen, and, throwing away no chances, eventually won easily. They are greatly to be congratulated on this success after their severe defeat by Hampshire. But it must not be forgotten that they had Llewellyn to help them. S outh Africans. J. H. A lthough they had a lead of 62 on the first innings Essex did so badly on Tuesday evening, that when stumps were drawn tbey had lost four wickets and were only 115 runs on. The play was pretty slow throughout both days, and especially slow in the Essex second innings, Mr. Perrin being at the wicket for nearly three-quarters of an hour for 8 , and the total of 53 being put together in an hour and three- quarters. Yesterday Essex had an uphill game, and Mr. McGahey alone wasequal to the occasion. In the first hour’s play on Monday Lancashire lost five wickets, and the sixth wicket fell with the total at 81. Hallows and Sharp ihen made amost valuable stand of 117, but after the bad beginning Lancashire were always fighting a very uphill game. At the close of play on Monday, Notts were only 61 runs behind with nine wickets in hand, Shrewsbury and W. Gunn both beiog still in with over 50 to their credit. Thiogs looked much better for Lancashire after twenty minutes’ play on Tuesday morning, for Shrewsbury, Gunn, Dench and Mr. Goodacre were all out, and only 7 runs had been added to the score. Once more the fortunes of the game took a sudden turn and Notts began to gain the upper hand rapidly, eventually leading by 226 runs on the first innings. As Lancashire, for the second time in the match, lost Mr. MacLaren and Ward for small scores, their posi tion seemed very bad, and although Tyldesley and Mr. Garnett prevented any further disaster, the county with two wickets down when stumps were drawn, still required 134 runs to save the inning’s defeat. Yesterday Tyldesley played the most wonder ful innings of his life, and gradually the match slipped out of the hands of the Notts men. Tyldesley was out last. L a n c a sh ir e . First innings.
