Cricket 1901

148 CRICKET . A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 2 3 , 190A It is difficult to reconcile these conflicting statements. Mr. Mynn’s average weight when playing was from eighteen to twenty stone, Mr. Aislabie’s, during the last few years he played, nineteen or twenty, and George B rown’ s, of Sussex, eighteen ! (It may not be out of place to remark here that, according to the Dictionary of National Biography, the famous Daniel Lambert was a cricketer in his youth. This remarkable man sub sequently weighed over fifty-two stone !) Mr. W . W . P . Pullen played for Somer setshire v. Hampshire, at Southampton, in 1881, being only fifteen years of age at the time. T. Warsop, the famous Nottingham bowler, played for N ottin g ham v. Marylebone, at Nottingham , in 1791, when he was only eleven or twelve years of age. E. Stanley, when he represented Harrow against E ton, at Lord’s, in 1805, was but thirteen years old. Mr. G. F . Grace assisted the South of the Thames against the North of the Thames, at Canterbury, in 1866, when only fifteen years of age. On the other hand, Mr. Benjamin Aislabie was sixty - seven when h e played for M .C .C . and Ground v. Cambridge University, at L ord’s, in 1841. The famous John Small, of Hambledon, played for Hampshire against the Marylebone Club, at L ord’s, in 1798, when sixty-one years of age, and William Lillywhite was the same age when he assisted Sussex v. M .C.C. and Ground, at Lord’s, in 1853. A rumour has reached me to the effect that Mr. C. J. M . F ox , who rendered good service to the game in Kent for many years, is dead. Can any reader of Cricket say definitely whether such iB the case ? _____________________ INCOGNITI v. WESTMINSTER SCHOOL. — Played at Vincent Square on May 18. I n co gn iti . S. Phillips, Napier, Graham, N. C. Phillips, Havi- land and Thorbum . In all probability the eleven will be a strong batting side, the two Phillips, Graham and Mann being all very sound bats. Bow ling is likely to be scarce and no fast bowler seems to be forthcoming. Of last year’s second X I. W ragg and K . Robinson are the most promising batsmen and Clarke (medium left) the most likely bowler. The Chel tenham match is down for June 11 and 12, at Marlborough ; and with Ru gby for July 31 and August 1, at Lord’s. MAY. 27. v. Liverpool and District* JUNE. 1. v. Keble College 8 . v. Harper, the captain of last year, who bids fair, judging b y his high scoring at Cambridge, to confirm his very high school reputation as a rungetter, ROSSALL has had to part with quite its best cricketer of recent years. As it is there are only four old choices in F . B. Roberts, the present captain, who obtained his colour in 1898; E . H . Hincks and C. L . Fabel, who have been in the last two years; and S. F. Peshall, who got into the eleven in 1900. Roberts was very successful both as a batsman and bowler last summer. Fabel and Peshall both had fair batting averages, and Fabel and H incks were change bowlers. The Loretto match has this year to be played at Rossall, that with Shrewsbury at Shrewsbury. MAY. 22.
