140 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 1 6 , 1901. SURREY v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Leicester on May 13, 14 and 15. Surrey won by ten wickets. Anxious to see how their new ground looked when a first-class match was in progress, the men of Leicester town turned up in large numbers on Monday and had the great pleisure of seeing their own team at the wickets during thewhole of the day’s play. While on most other grounds the batsmen were in difficulties, the wicket played splendidly at Leicester, and the weak Surrey bowling was tried to the utmost. Lockwood, who did so finely against Hampshire, was harmless on the easy wicket, though it by nomeans follows that batsmen are always going to score off him under similar circumstances, and but for the happy thought of the captain to try Abel, things might have looked exceedingly bad by the end of the day. As it was the Leicester total of 3*i9 for 7 wickets was formidable enough. Mr. "Wood, for the fourth innings in succession against the Surrey bowling, made a Jot of runs in excellent style, and in partnership with Knight brought the score to 83 for the first wicket; he narrowly escaped making a hundred for the second time this year against the Surrey bowling. Afterwards Pousher, King and Coe all did well, and the only failure was Whitehead. Mr. de Trafford and Mr. R. T. Crawford (who is a brother of V. F. S.) was playing for the first time for Leicestershire, the county of his birth. The innings was not unduly prolonged on Tuesday and then, as they probably expected, the Leicestershire men had quite as much fielding as they wanted. Abel and Brockwell began the Surrey innings as usual, and at lunch time were still together with the total at 83. Anv hope |that Leicestershire may have had of finishing the match off quickly soon dissipated, and it was not until the score was 158that the bowlers could induce Abel to make a mistike. There was never a time during this innings when Leicestershire had any hope that fortune was about to turn in their favour. As ^ach batsman came in he mastered the bowling, and the result was that at the close of the day the surrey total was 379 for seven wickets. This was considerably increased yesterday morning, and Leicestershire were left to try for a dra *-. At lunch time they had lost four wickets for 20 runs, and there after they were always playing a losing game, King alone playing up to his reputation on a wicket which was wearing. The upshot was that Surrey had an easy victoiy. L eicestershire .
