126 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 9, 19 01, M.C.C. v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Lord’s on May 6, 7, and 8. Yorkshire won by six wickets. For some reason or other which cannot easily be accounted for, crowds do not roll up in their thousands to see the M.C.C. matches as they did some years ago, and this makes the big ground at Lord’s look somewhat cheerless, more especially on a cold day. The M.C.C. had got together a far stronger team than usual, and their bowling was decidedly strong. On paper they had a fine batting team also, but in the first innings only two men, Storer and Carpenter, gave a good account of themselves. Both played very cautiously at the commencement of their innings, but whereas Storer always seemed comfortable Carpenter was often in difficulties. Later in the innings Storer played a most attractive game. At one time there was an appearance that the score would be very large, but Hirst bowled with so much success after luncheon that the end came much sooner than was anticipated. He had previously met with no success, but when he was put on with the total at 163, he bowled 13 overs for 32 runs and 7 wickers. At the end of the day Yorkshire were in nearly the same position at Lord’s as Surrey at the Oval, with the exception that they had many more men likely to make runs left for the morrow; they had lost Tunnicliffe, Brown, and Mr. Mitchell for 108 runs. On Tuesday Hirst followed up his fine bowling by scoring 87, a good innings which included some elaborate pulls. Denton also played a splendid innings, and Whitehead did well. At lunch time the score was 274 for 8 wickets. Rain then fell, and the game was interrupted for some time. The M.C.C. fared badly in their second innings, and when stumps were drawn they were only 19 runs to the good with six wickets down—four of them to Hirst. Yesterday Yorkshire only had to make 67 to win, but so finely did Mead bowl that four of the best men were out for 26, and possibly if there had not then been an interruption of the game for luncheon, the M.C.C. might have won on the post. But the spell was broken when the game was resumed, and the runs were soon knocked off. M.C.C. Capt. E. G. Wynyard, c Whitehead, b Rhodes ... 9 W. L.
