Cricket 1901

M a y 2, 1901. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 109 ow ing to the paucity of spectators. But the few who put in an appearance had the good luck to see a characteristic innings by Albert Trott, which means much to an onlooker. Hallam and J. Gunn were too good for most of the M.C.C. batsmen. Dench and W. Gunn, by excellent cricket, gained almost a mastery over the M.C.C. bowling, putting on 119 for the second wicket in an hour and twenty minutes, so that no one could complain that the play was too slow to be interesting. When stumps were drawn Notts had scored 319 for seven wickets. M.C.C. and G round . W . L. Murdoch, b J. G unn.......................... 11 Hearne (A .),b Wass... 6 P. Played at Oxford on April ‘29, 30, and May 1. Drawn. So soon have the keen winds dried up the ground that the batsmen had matters to their liking in this match, although on the first day only two of them very greatly distinguished themselves. These were E. H . Hollins and R. J. H. Voss, who played cricket of the liveliest and best kind while they were in together. By the time that Hollins was out there was not much sting left in the bowling, and Voss and Grellot took advantage of this to score 70 in half an hour. Voss was at the wicket for two hours and twenty minutes for his fine innings of 136. The innings was ended just before the time for drawing stumps. On Tuesday the play was not very lively, but some excellent batting was shown by Adamson, Wyld, Moss, Williams, and Samson, and the total was only 14 short of that of Mr. Hollin’s side. Nearly every batsman in the second innings of Mr. Hollin’s side made runs, but Mr. Voss alone showed up very prominently. M b . H ollin ’ s S ide . Second innings. 8 b Moss... b Moss...
