Finsbury, y. H.A.C.C.C. SU R R E Y COUNTY C.C. The follow ing are the most important items in the annual report of the com mittee :— Ih e committee regret that they are unable to report as favourably on Surrey cricket during the past season as they have done for the past few years. Of the twenty-eight matches played in the First-class County Championship in 1900, nine were won, twelve drawn, and seven lost. It is, however, fair to mention that of the seven defeats, four were lost by very small margins, one by a wicket, one by five runs, one by eleven, and another by twenty-six runs. The committee are hopeful that a material improvement may be shown during the approaching season. The cricket of the Second Eleven was disappointing. Of sixteen matches played, three were won, eight drawn, and five lost. The hearty thanks of the club are due to Mr. D. L. A. Jephson, for the able way in which he fulfilled the responsible duties of captain, and for the example which he set to the members of the eleven. As captain of the Second Eleven, Mr. K. E. M. Barker was indefatigable. For the coming seison, home and home matches have been arranged with all the fourteen first-class counties, as well as with the London County C.C., and Oxford and Cambridge Universities. A match against the South African team has also been arranged. The match between Gentlemen and Players will be played at the Oval on July 11th, 12th and 13th. The committee deeply regret the loss of three old and valued members of the club during the year, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Marshall, president from 1867 to 1879, and vice-president from 1895 to 1900, Mr. John Burrup, one of the original founders and second hon. secretary of the club, and Sir F. A. Marindin, K.C.M.G. The committee, under the provisions of Rule XV ., elected the Right Hon. W . St. J. Brodrick, M.P., and Mr. F. G. Thorne to fill the two vacancies on the committee. The rules provide that the vice-presidents shall be elected at the annual general meeting. The increased accommodation enables the committee to announce that they consider it unnecessary to put into force the provisions of Rule X III., withdrawing the privilege of members to introduce a friend into the pavilion. During the year 163 new members were elected. Up to the present time 3,626 members have paid their subscriptions for 1C01. From the accounts it will be seen that there was a deficit of £502 los. 9d. on the year’s working. This unusual result is attributable, in no small degree, to the material diminution in the receipts from matches, caused mostly by exceptional ill luck in regard to the weather, as well as by the general depression on account of the war. Surrey cricket has not been singular in this respect, as a similar result appears to have been experienced amongst the county clubs in general. In appreciation of the excellent work he has done for Surrey cricket, the proceeds of the Yorkshire match at the Oval, on July 25, 26, and 27, will be given to W . H. Lockwood. The members are earnestly requested to co-operate tD make the match a thorough success. The following members of the committee retire by rotation and are eligible for re- election : Dr. C. C. Blades, Rt. Hon. W . St. J. Brodrick, M.P., W . Burrup, J. Colman, Lt.-Col. G. L. M. Farmer, G. H. Longman, D. R. Onslow, L. A. Shuter. The annual general meeting of the club will be held in the Pavilion, on Thursday, May 2, at 5 p.m. MATCH EXPENSES. Derbyshire..................................................
