Cricket 1900

14 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME M a r c h 29, 1900. THE PASSING OF KEY-ARTHUR. [Mr. K. J. Key has resigned the captaincy of the Surrey Eleven.] Thun spake Key-Arthur to Sir Bobby dear : “ My action of to-day unsolders all The goodliest county team of famous bats Who oft have made a record. Such a team ! They weep—the men I loved. I think that we Shall never more, upon the Oval field, Delight the crowds with scores of mighty length, Knocking about the bowlers and the balls At Kennington, as in the days that were. I vanish, though my county may repine,— Tho’ critics swear that I t-hall come again To rule the team ; but let what will be, be, 1 am so greatly broadened i’ the beam That without rest I scarce could last the day. Thou, therefore, take my brand new Cobbet, sir, Which is my pride: for thou rememberest how In those old days, one summer noon, my arm Smote up a ball to heaven—but the field (Hold it ti^ht, dammit.—Missed i t ! What a fool!) Muckered the catch—and how I made a score, And took it, and have oiled it, till it shines: And, wheresoever cricketers do meet In aftertime, this score shall be their talk : But now delay not; take my Cobbet, sir, And smash him hard upon the middle stump : Break him to bits, and bring them forth to me.” W. A. B. TH E WEST IN D IA N TEAM FOR ENGLAND . It would appear that Barbados is to supply five players for the West Indian team, Trinidad three, Demerara three, Grenada, Jamaica, and St. Vincent each one. Of the four reserves Jamaica can claim two, Demerara and Barbados each one. Dissatis faction is felt in Jamaica with the fact that Pearce and Ledington are on the reserves instead of on the eleven. The following is the personnel of the team :— G. B. Y. Cox (Barbados), twenty-nine years of age.—A master at Harrison College, and a member of that club, as well as of the Pickwick. A fine bat, with great hitting powers. C o le , H. A. (Barbados), twenty-four years ol age.—An excellent bat and field. Has been in England three months, and made 48 for Barbados against St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Member of Pickwick Club. H in d s , F. (Barbados).—Good all-round cricketer, bowls well, with a peculiar action. Member of Spartan Club. B o w b in g , J un ., W .—Good bat, hard hitter, makes his runs mostly in front of the wicket by hard drives. Has a good forcing stroke oif his legs, and plays very hard, especially on the off. D’A dk , L. S. A. (Trinidad).—Not now up to his usual form ; steady bat and good field. C on stan tin e , L. (Trinidad).—Fine bat, cuts hard ; good wicket-keeper. W oods , Professional (Trinidad). — Has done wonders with the ball against English visiting teams, but doubtful whether he will be effective on good wickets. K e r r , M. (Jamaica).—Captain of the Mel bourne and member of the Kingston C.C. In 1898-99 he played in 34 matches, 35 innings, making 1,087 runs, three times not out, most in an innings 97, averago 33 95. During the same season he bowled 144 over?, of which 28 were maidens, 37 wickets, average 9-57. O l liv e r r e , C. (St. Vincent).—Fine all round cricketer, best as a bat, clean and neat style, with good eye. M ig n o n , W. H. (Grenada).—The best amateur bowl -r in the West Indies. He gets on a lot of work both ways, and uses his head a good deal. He generally bowls a medium pace, but he has a very fast ball up his sleeve. As a batsman, often makes runs, and fields well, especially at slip. As hard as nails, and can bowl all day. S pbo ston , S. W. (Demerara).—Twenty- four years of age. Very good bat, combining sound defence with punit-hing powers; useful change bowler, and good field anywhere. Has no superior as a batsman in the West Indies. Learned his cricket in England. Played for Richmond (Surrey), Eastbourne, and Teddington. Played during the 1898 season, scoring 101 runs for Richmond against Upper Tooting, and 110 for Teddington against Hampshire. (Demerara).—Brilliant bat, scoring on any wicket, but not quite up to form owing to want of practice ; very strong on the off-side and in late cutting and driving. Good field anywhere. Can keep wicket. P earce , F. L. (Jamaica).—Thirty years of age. Was at school in England from 1878 to 1884. Played for Margate High School. Captain of the Kingston C.C. since 1893, and of the teams that played against Demerara and the English cricketers in 1895 and 1897. His steadiness as a batsman, his excellent fielding, and good bowling entitle him to a place in the team. L ivin gston e , G. V. (Jamaica).—Member of the Kensington and Kingston C.C. Very good bowler; quite the best player Jamaica can put forward. Cox, P. I. (Barbados).—Twenty-one years of age. Steady bat, fair field, and fair change bowler ; member of the Wanderers. LE IC E S TE R SH IR E COUNTY CLUB . T h e annual meeting of the members of the L.C.C. was held in the Assembly Rooms, Leicester, on the 17th inst., Mr. E. Holmes (president) occupying the chair. The committee’s report stated that two hundred members were elected last season. The whole of last season’s players are again available, and the fol lowing professionals have been engaged for the ground:—Knight, Brown C., Brown J. H., King J., Agar, Dixon, Whitehead, and Marlow. The response for subscriptions to the fund for the new ground had been most encouraging, the total amount promised being £3,280. G. G. Hearne had inspected the site and had reported favouraoly upon it. The financial statement was not so satisfactory, as the balance of £71 had been turned into a deficit of £71. The committee stated that they had set the Yorkshire match aside for Pougher’s benefit, and the report concluded by acknowledging the services which Mr. C. E. de Trafford bad rendered to the club in the capacity of captain. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and the officers of the club cordially thanked for their services—all being re-elected.
