Cricket 1900

462 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Nov. 29, 1900. year a wall was built round it, and it soon became known as Ireland’s Gardens. Brighton now became the recognised centre of cricket in Sussex, the Brighton club being strong enough to meet Hampshire, Middlesex and the M.C.C. A history of the old Brighton Club would form a very interesting chapter in the history of the game. Some of the matches were commenced on one ground and finished on another, whilst one— against Middlesex—was actually com menced in September, 1792, and finished in May of the following year. The first portion of this last-mentioned match was played in the presence of the Duchess de Noailles, who had escaped a few days previously from France in rn^le attire, and during her voyage of fourteen hours had hidden herself in the coil of a cable. In September, 1791, Sussex (west of Arundel) defeated the Hambledon Club by eleven runs, but the latter was by no means so strong as it had been a few years before. In June, 1792, Sussex and Surrey combined their forces and opposed England, at Lord’s, scoring 453 in their only innings and eventually winning by an innings and 277 runs. The honours of the game were clearly carried off by the Surrey men. The first match between East Sussex and West Sussex took place in 1802 ; and the same year the North of the county met the South. In one of the latter matches J. Hammond scored the first century recorded in Sussex, 110 not out for the North. The first Sussex match, the full score of which is in existence, is of a match against Epsom, on the Level, Brighton, in 1815. Tbe county ieceived the assistance of William Lambert and Mr. George Osbaldeston, and with their aid succeeded in winning by 21 runs. Sussex undoubtedly played other matches about this date, but the scores have yet to be discovered. TH E PU B L IC SCHOOLS JN 1900. (Continuedfrompage 448.) HARROW SCHOOL.
