Cricket 1900
O ct . 25, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 439 Enormous benefit matches and large additional collections made on the ground are now given to and received by all deserving cricketers who likewise excel in the game. Formerly £200 or £300 was considered to be a capital benefit, but now £1,000, and even £2,000 has been realised by and through subscription lists, entrance money, etc. Wicket-keepers cf about fifty years ago, namely, T. Box, E. G. Wenman, W. Ridding, T. Lockyer, W. Nicholson, J. Guy, W. Dorrinton, H. H. Stephenson, T. A. Anson, G. Chatterton, etc., all “ stood up ” to the fastest bowling. Never at and about that date did any of the above-mentioned men of fame “ stand back,” as is often done in 1hese days. All cricket grounds, too, including Lord’s and the Oval, were then rough and dangerous to what they are now. Longstops, too, are now seldom required or used, but an extra man is available thereby, and is placed out in the field instead. Formerly the longstop held a most arduous position, owing entirely to the dreadful state of all grounds. For example, in 1842, in the Eton and Harrow match at Lord’s, Messrs. Marcon, Fellows, and Yonge bowled with such tremendous speed that Harrow obtained no less than eighty-five “ extras,” of which sixty-six were byes alone! ! In conclusion, I wish to assert as a positive fact, that cricket in and about 1850 was on all points played under far greater difficulties and dangers than have to be risked and faced in 1900, and thereabouts. It is no doubt much pleasanter to those engaged to feel safe, comparatively speaking, during the pro gress of a match, and I only wish to mention certain alterations as they have taken place during the last half-century, and nothing more do I seek to point out. Cricket also is made too much like a convivial meeting in these days to the great detriment of the game in general. There is too much eating and drinking. It was not so formerly. “ Quod vidimus testamur.” OLD CITIZENS. BATTING AVERAGES. P. W . Hale................. H. B lew ett................ B . C. C o le ................. J. H. Barnett ......... H.
