By “ A N OLD HARROVIAN .” All printed books and cards and papers, or MS. scores of cricket matches were intended to be preserved as a record, and as a means to follow and trace each cricketer’s career, whether amateur or professional. Initials therefore prefixed to each name are absolutely necessary for the present and also for future generations to come, and they ought never to have been omitted. In the Cricket Scores and Biographies, the compiler and author of the first fourteen volumes of that work, always , when possible, prefixed initials, though they were generally, and in fact almost invariably, wanting in published scores, in printed books and in all MSS. to which he had access, during his long and arduous compilation for so many years. And here it may be mentioned that in these volumes, there are altogether no less than t e n thousand pages culled from various sources, by aud through constant application to all parts of the world. He wishes now to point out how necessary initials are to all names, though they have been and are even now irregularly, and only occasionally, pre fixed to those engaged in matches, both great and small, and especially to pro fessionals. There have been, there are, and always will be, many cricketers of the same name playing in various places and for different counties, or clubs, or schools, and though to cricketers well versed in the history of the game, it is, perhaps, easy to dis tinguish which — Brown, — Jones, — Robinson, — Watson, — Wilson, — King, — Wright, etc., it may be participating, still it is not so with all readers. Many who peruse cricket matches know little of the facts or early history of our national game, and therefore are left entirely in the dark as to which is which t whenever certain names occur without initials or prefix of any kind. It is hoped therefore that in future, this omission will not continue, and that these suggested and necessary improvements will be regularly carried out, though certainly it must be allowed that initials are not now so invariably omitted as they were only a few years back. All secretaries and hon. secretaries are, however, much to blame in this matter, and have been so ever since cricket began. For had they only directed the scorers in their boxes to prefix initials, it would, of course, have been done, and more accuracy and interest in preserving the annals of the game would have resulted. The records of cricket in some form or other commenced at least 150 years back and even sooner, though then they were exceedingly meagre, few in number and inaccurately drawn up. This continued for many years, careless ness and want of interest in the “ Noble Game” being the sole cause.
