I —THE BATSMAN. Let me be A batsman bold, Hitting all day, Scoring all day On a wicket that’s true and carefully rolled. I would be a batsman bold ; I would stand and hit the whole of the day ; I would pull an off-ball with a stroke of power; I would register boundaries hour after hour; Of off-breaks and leg-breaks alike make hay. My strokes would avoid the fieldsman’s grasp, And they’d hunt the leather, and pant and gasp Wheezily, wheezily. On the scoring-board watch my total climb By twenties and thirties till drawing-time, Easily, Easily. II.—THE BOWLER. Let me be A bowler keen; Straight would I bowl, Fast would I bowl, With breaks so deadly as not to be seen. I would be a bowler keen, But I would not bowl the whole of the day. I’d pitch my balls on a tricky spot, Frighten the batsmen and start a rot; Send man after man from the wicket away. If anyone ventured to hit me for four, I would bustle the umpire for leg-before. My fieldsmen would have to be men who could stop Hard cuts; not inclined their catches to drop Fumblingly, fumblingly. When a game is once lost it’sno manner of use For a catch that’s been missed to bring out some excuse Stumblingly, stumblingly. F. C . M. R ic h a r d s . CR ICK E T IN IN D IA .
