The following interesting notes and comments have been kindly sent by “ King Willow ” :— “ Some years ago, says a well-known cricketer—Mr. R. A. H. Mitchell—if a man made a long score at the Oval, or Fenner’s, or at Brighton, it was said it was no test of cricket. And what was true at the time this opinion was given still holds good to a very great extent. At any rate, it must on all hands be conceded that scoring generally is much easier on the Hove ground and at Fenner’s than on any other two grounds where first-class cricket is regularly played. “ During the past season ‘ Ranji ’ went to the wickets on 40 occasions, being five times not out, making 3,044 runs, and playing his highest innings of 275 at Leicester. “ An analysis of his various scores and the grounds he made them on may be of interest. No fewer than sixteen innings were played at Hove, four at Hastings, two at Cambridge, two at Oxford, two at Tonbridge, two at Eastbourne, two at Trent Bridge, two at Manchester, two at Sheffield, and two at Southampton; one only at Lord’s and the Oval (he did not give metropolitan cricketers much of t chance !), Leicester, Bristol, and Taunton “ No fewer than 1,455 of his aggregate runs were made at Brighton, for which ground his average was a point under 104 per innings. At Cambridge, too, he utilised his two opportunities by scoring 373 (once not out), and thus on the two easiest grounds of the kingdom scored 1,828 runs, with an average of 121 per innings. How greatly ‘ Ranji ’ appre ciates the Hove ground may be understood by a glance at his scores there this year : 36, 15 not out, 97, 127, 222, 0, 29, 41, 88 not out, 8, 103, 202, 109, 73, 87, and 220, A nice little sequence these last half- dozen, giving a total of 794.” CORNWALL. Matches played, 5 ; won, 2; drawn, 2; lost,l. The other matches had to be abandoned on account of rain. BATTING AVERAGES. No. Times Most of not Total in an inns. out. runs. inns. Aver. J. R.
