For the last match but one of the season the sides were exceedingly^strong, notwith standing that Mr. MacLaren and Mr. Mason were absent from the England team. As usual in these matches the rate of scoring was much more rapid than is generally seen when counties are opposed to each other in the championship competition, and on the first day, although England were only batting for three hours and fifty minutes, they scored 355. There was not very much promise of a good score at first, and five wickets were down for 115. The first good stand was made by Mr. Bumup and Hirst, producing 67 runs in an hour, and then Trott and Mr. Burnup scored 63 in a little over half-an-hour, while in the next three-quarters of an hour Trott and Lilley put on 89. Trott was at last well caught on the boundary for 102, a fine innings which lasted for only eighty minutes; it included eighteen 4’s. Surrey and Sussex had a few minutes’ batting and made 17 with out loss. On'luesday Abel played safe and attractive cricket, and at length made his score a hundred. There was prolonged applause whenj he reached^ the^ three figures, for he had then succeeded in bringing his total of hundreds for the season to twelve, being the first man who has ever accomplished this feat. Hayward was going very strong when he was out, and seemed likely to bring his total of hundreds for the season to eleven. The batting of Ranjitsinhji was now watched with the greatest interest, and as he began to pile on ten after ten it seemed very probable that he would make another hundred, and thus get level with Abel. But when he seemed safest his innings was brought to a conclusion. The tail did not very greatly distinguish themselves, but when the innings was over Surrey and Sussex had a lead of four runs. Lest of England scored 52 for the loss of W .G . before stumps were drawn. W ith such strongbatting sides, and the bowlers a little stale, it was any odds that the game would not be finished. Several fine innings were played, and a splendid stand was made by Hirst and Mr. Townsend which was not concluded at lunch-time, when the innings was closed. Surr y and Sussex had *o make 289 in two hours and thirty-five minutes 'Ihe hundred went up in a little over the hour, but the t coring was not quick enough afterwards to bring about a victory. Abel was near to making a second hundred in the match. R e s t o f E n g la n d . First innings. Second innings. W . G. Grace, sen., c Ranjit- sinhji, b Vine ... ...............36 A . E.
