Sing of the mighty Tykes, the invincible sons of Yorkshire. Sing of their mighty deeds, in the season of nineteen hundred. Bearing the white-rose flag, safe through the midst of the conflicts. W hile other counties fell, shattered before their onslaught. Led by their famous “ dux,” kind and bold and resourceful; Bearing with chosen others the palm of successful captains. Respected hy all his team, the veriest sportsman living. Thus the eleven fought, fought the rest of the counties. Many they overcame, wrestled and beat and threw them. Forced their way to the top, over the red-rose county. Topped the all-conquering force, the army of A . 0 . MacLaren. Burst through the ranks of Kent, and draggled the banner of Sussex. Cheerful and smart to the end, right to the end of the battle. Sprang at their foes like the lion, as he siezes his prey in the gloaming. W hile other counties fell, fell like the com in harvest. High as ever there flew the spotless standard of Yorkshire. Join in congratulations, all the lovers of cricket, Honour the mighty Tykes, the invincible sons of Yorkshire. ________________________ S. P L A Y E R S .’ * N icely and neatly bound, and brought up to the match at L ord’s this year, this little book contains a complete history of all the matches between Gentlemen and Players. That it is an accurate record goes without saying. The plan followed has been to give the scores of each match — for the first few years the bow ling analysis is wanting, because no analysis was kept— w ith a few explanatory notes, which are just long enough to tell the reader all that he is likely to want to kuow about the match, w ithout going into it deeply. A great number of curious details are mentioned, among them being the carrying of old W illiam Lillywhite to the wicket when he was too much disabled to walk there. Another interesting note shows that M r. H aygarth, in the match at L ord’ s in 1858, scored two runs, and saw seven wickets fall during his inniogs. Com plete statistics— they are not over whelm ingly lo n g— are placed at the end of the book. It is interesting to find that Ranjitsinhji has never made a hundred in one of these matches, that D r. Grace has made fifteen hundreds, and has played in no fewer than 79 matches, with 140 innings, George U ly ett, with 37 matches and 65 innings, com ing next to him . W e have only noticed one m is print— M r. C . J . B am up for Burnup, on page 167. W e do not see how any student of the game can dispense with this very useful book. * “ Gentlemen v.
