396 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e p t . 6 , 1900. S A I L O R S N O T I N IT . M U LTNOM AH CLUB CR ICKETERS W IN — A RECORD SCORE B Y CAPT. LAW R EN C E . The follow ing report from the Sunday Oregonian , United State?, is quite worth reproducing: — British tars fared badly at the hands of Multnomah Club’s cricketers yesterday after noon. The middies from the ships in the harbor batted in vain against the deceptive bowling of the Portland team, and in one innings met a decisive defeat. Even the name of Australia seems to strike terror into the hearts of cricketers of all nationalities, and yesterday proved no exception to the rule. The two Fenwicks, junior and senior, and the veteran Captain Lawrence, both in bowl ing and batting, were too much for the Britishers in port. These players received their training in the Antipodes, and with stood every onslaught of their opponents in fine style. Walker, a recent addition to the ranks of the local players, made a pretty running for his 16, not out, and his team play with Captain Lawrence was of sufficient strength to force the local men to declare their inning closed with a total of 182 runs, with three men to bat. The score of Captain Laurence— 105, not out, is a record. Among the Briti'hero the century mark is a coveted one. Captain Lawrence allowed but one chance to retire him, and that whs a hard one, and his century earn ing his bat is a record in the annals of the club. Foster, for the home team, hit up a mirry 14 until he was caught by Van Heekeren, bowled Barber. Gillman, Jr., tallied an inning of 11 with no chances until he was put out, leg before wicket, by Van Heekeren. For the middies, Barber for 6 and Van Hcekeren with 34 played the most consistent cricket. The balls flew off with monotonous regularity, and then the Australian bowling of the two Fenwicks was well punished. The handicap was too much, however, and the seamen retired with good grace with only 54 tallies to their credit, as against 182 by the Multnomah men. The features of the game were Captain Lawrence’s 1* 5, not. out; Walker’s consistent defence for 16, not ou t; the bowling of Fen wick, senior and junior; Van Heekeren’s good inning for 34, and the all-around fair play of the British sailors, who have not as yet regained their land legs. Their sea legs were not very much in evidence yesterday, but, considering the fact that these boys have not had a bat in their hands for a year or more and. play the game just because they like it, their showing is nothing to be ashamed of.
