Cricket 1900

S e p t . 6, 1900 CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 395 THE SCARBOROUGH FESTIVAL. MR. C. I. THORN TON ’S X I. v. YORK SH IR E . Played on September 3, 4, and 5. Yorkshire won by 3 wickets. There were fome curious changes in this match on tbe first day. TLe scratch team had at lunch time scored 216 for four wickets, but afterwards Rhodes bowled with so much success that he took four of the last six wickets for 28 runs more, and in all only 50 luns were added. Th« feature of the innings was what i* now knowu as a dishing display by Mr. Jessop, who went in with the score at 94 for three wickets and in the course of fifty exciting minutes put together 95 runs. His hits, which were some of them astonishing, included three sixes and eleven fours. But although every other innings paled by compari son with his, Mr. V\arner, Mr. W . L foster and Mr. Leveson-Gower all played excellent cricket, Mr. Foster showing more and more plainly what a lot his county has lost by his absence during the season. Another very attractive irnings was that of Denton for Yorkshire ; he was only batting for an hour and twenty minutes for his 88. At the close of the day Yorkshire had lost six wickels for 164 against the 266 of Mr. Thornton’s X I., W ainwrigH being not out. 21. The Yorkshire tail asserted itself strongly on Tues day, Wainwright, who is just at the pie.-ent moment about the best bat in the team, playing a splendid in nings. whi'e Haigh helped him nobly. Consequently the scratch team had to face an adverse balance of 70. Again Mr. W . L. Foster played a beautiful innings, while Mr. Warner was iu fine'form . But things on the whole went badly until Trott and Board made a great stand. In the end Yorkshire had to make 207 to win. and aa nearly everv ma > helped to swell the total the victory was won, although there were possibilities of excitement at the finish. Mb. C. I.
