356 OKJCKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 23, 1S00. the only brothers who have both exceeded the “ three fifties.” The match which will commence to-day at Brighton between Yorkshire and Sus sex has been set apart as a benefit for Hariy Butt, who for the past decade has been in quite the first flight of wicket keepers. The following short table will show at a glance how much Butt has accomplished “ behind the sticks” since his introduction to first-class cricket:— H . E. BUTT’S W ICKET-KEEPING PERFORMANCES. Year. Caught. Stumped. Total. 1890 .. ... 21 ... ... 7 ... ... 28 1891 .... ... 14 ... ... 9 ... ... 23 1892 .... ... 35 ... ... 10 ... ... 45 1893 .... ... 30 ... ... 31 ... ... 61 1894 . ... 29 ... ... 24 ... ... 63 1895 . ... 25 ... ... 15 ... ... 40 1896 .... ... 26 ... ... 8 ... ... 33 1897 .. . ... 62 ... ... 8 ... ... 60 1898 . ... 44 ... ... 11 ... ... 55 1899 ..., ... 53 ... ... 9 ... ... 62 Against Gloucestershire, at Bristol, in 1899, he caught six in one innings, and against Kent, at Tonbridge, in the same year, he made eight catches in the two innings of his opponents—a feat he also performed this season against Somerset shire at Brighton. In the match against Cambridge University, at Brighton, in 1890, he kept wicket throughout the long innings of 703 (for nine wickets) and only allowed a single bye. Granted fine weather, the match should run into the third day and yield Butt over a thousand pounds. Verily, Mr. W. G. Grace seems able, like the brook, to “ go on for ever.” He reckons not by years. His first century in great matches was made as far back as 1866, whilst his one hundred and twen tieth (and most recent) came from his bat only last week. His last three consecu tive scores have been 72, 110 not out, and 76. Even for a young player in his prime this would have been considered an ex cellent performance, but for a man who has passed his fifty-second year, and who has to a certain extent lost that nimble ness and agility which is generally con sidered essential to ensure success on the cricket-field, it is little less than marvel lous. C(ssar, Omnu te salutant. To Mr. R. L. Elderton I am indebted for the following note: “ In addition to Alec Hearne and Alan Hill, there is another case of a bowler doing the hat- trick and failing to get another wicket in the innings. On August 28th, 1890, Martin, the Kent bowler, got rid of Abel, Maurice Read, and K. J. Key, and failed to obtain another wicket. Wright took the other seven, and, if I remember rightly, the two bowlers were unchanged throughout the innings.” OLD CITIZENS on July 28. v. 8LCUGH .—Played at Slough O ld C it iz e n s . P. W .
