Two postponements on account of wet weather were necessitated before the return match between these colonies could be begun at Adelaide. At last, on January 9, a start was made, and though easy at first, the wicket was not by any means in good condition. Darling won the toss and decided to send New South Wales to the wickets. Trumper and Iredale, the first two batsmen, took the score to 81, of which Trumper’ s share was 45 , made in forty minutes in his best style. Iredale was out next, but after him no stand was made till Pye and Kelly got together. The pair put on 44 for the ninth wicket, and Kelly was last out for a very useful 40. Giffen took f iv e wickets for 69, Jones three for 49. South Australia had only a short time for batting on the first day, and in that time lost F. Jarvis. On the second day the innings was completed for 197, or 17 behind New South Wales. The bulk of the scoring was done by the earlier bats men, Hack, Darling, and Hill con tributing 158 out of 187 from the bat. Rain stopped the game just before the usual time for drawing stumps on the second day, and continuing during the night, made the wicket fairly easy on the following morning, January 11. Iredale, who played fine cricket, and Gregory added 60 runs while they were together, and after some vigorous hitting by Hop kins, Farquhar and Kelly put on 76 for the ninth wicket. The South Australians, it may be remarked, were heavily handi capped in losing the bowling of Giffen, who had strained his side rather badly. At the end of the third day, South Australia, who wanted 335 to win, had made 11 of them without the loss of a wicket. On the following morning Hack was again seen to great advantage. Darling lent him such useful assistance that at luncheon time the score board showed 117 for two wickets, Hack, not out, 64; Darling, not out, 16. The two not outs remained together till 75 had been added, and then Darling was splendidly caught. Hack, however, con tinued to make runs freely off all the bowling, and he was in at the finish, giving Australia a brilliant victory by six wickets. He was missed in the slips when he had made four, but this was his only mistake. N ew S outh W a l e s . First innings. Second innings. V. Trumper, lbw, b Giffen 45 c Hugo, b Jones 7 F. A.
