Cricket 1900

334 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 9, 1900. SURREY v. NOTTS. Played at the Oval on August 6, 7 and 8. Drawn. There was no play at the Oval on Monday, owing to rain. On Tuesday Notts won the toss, and made aa excellent beginning with Shrewsbury and Mr. Jones on a slow but not very difficult wicket. Runs did not come very fast, but still the batting was not tedious. Mr. Jones was out for a well-played 46 with the total at 71. and after Ounn had been dismissed before he became dangerous, there was another very useful partnership between Mr. Dixon and Shrews bury, and the Surrey men. who. on account o f tha state of the turf, had displaced Richardson f -r Clode, the left-hand bowler who had a trial last year with out meeting with much success, could do nothing against them. Afterwards J. Qunn and Dench were completely settled when, with the score ac 181 for five wickets, raia stopped play. Yesterday play began at twenty minutes past twelve, and some exceedingly slow cricket followed, the batsmen being appaiently anxious to make certain of a draw. Surrey did not go in until after lunch. Off the first bull Brockwell was caught There the success of Notts may be said to hare ended, for the Surrey men kept in comfortably enough all the rest of the day. They would almost certainly have not been able to do this if it had not been for the remarkably useful inning* played by Hayes -n ot but what Abel played very fine cricket, and held one end quite safe. But Hayes demoralise ■ the tow.ers, and oy ths time he w*s out. they did not seem aSle to take advantage o f the more difficult state of the wicket. Hayes hit the fast bowling and slow bowling grtike, generally up in the air, but geaeraUy quite out of harm’s way. Apparently with the object of inducing him to give a c*tch to one of the long fields, Mr Jon>*» kept Mr. Dixon on all the time he was in, v ith results which were not altogether satisfactory, except to the spectators, who had the opportunity of seeing pome very pretty and tall hitting. A t last, after he had been in for fifty minutes only, Bayes gave the chance which had been so carefully waited for, and was brilliantly caught with the right arm well extended by Mr. A. O. Jones, who immediately after making th** oatch was carried against the palings by t ie force of the b ill. It was one of the prettiest catches of the season. vVhen Bayes was out tbe scoring board shewed t *o wickeds, 100 runs, Hayes “ 0 , Abel 2 . Surrey had now saved the follow- on, and the interest in the match d ed away. But Abel, who wa* never in difficulties, k**pt steadily on, never missing h loose ball, and lx>ckwood made some fine hits during his short innings. Hayward seemed to have come to stay, when he ran out to a very slo v ball from Mr. Jones, missed it. and suddenly sit down without any effort of his ow n ; he was, of course, stumped. Mr. Crawford cire- fully played balls which given by the sam • bowler in a club match, lis would have bit for six ; once or twice he gave a specimen of what he could do if he tri~d, but then quieted down again as if afraid of h>s temeiity ; it may be the game for him to play, but it seeing a pity if it is. By the time that he was out the game had become very uninteresting. N o t t s . T H E W E S T INDIAN TEAM. THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. SIXTBBNTH OF THE TOUR. Played at Bradford on August 6. Abandoned. There was only twenty minutes* play in this match on Monday, during which Yorkshire, who gave most of their best professionals a rest, put on 23 runs with out losing a wicket. On Tuesday the match was abandoned, as it was obvious that the wicket would not be fit for play yesterday. Y o r k s h ir e . T. L. Taylor, not out ... .
