Cricket 1900
A ug . 9, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 333 batsmen were still together, Mr. Fry with 68, and Ranjitsinhji with 43: total, 149 for two wickets. Yesterday they continued to play perfect cricket until each had made a hundred. The match was then quite safe. During the partnership 169 runs were put on. Mr. Fry made his 105 in two hours and forty minutes, and Ranj itsinhji his 109 in an hour and a half. The tail did nothing, but any other result than a draw was now quite out of the question. Mr. Townsend played splendid cricket in the Glou cestershire second innings. G lou cestersh ire . First innings. R. W . Rice, c Fry, b Bland 7 Wrathall, c Butt, b Bland... 0 F. Drawn. On Monday it was not possible to play at Derby owing to the rain, and play did not begin until alter luncheon on Tuesday. Captain Wynyard, who made one of his too infrequent appearances for his county, began the Hampshire innings well, but was out just when he was getting dangerous, and although Webb only made 2, Barton and Mr. E. J. Newton gained quite ama«tery over the bowling. Play was, however, only possible for about an hour and a half, during which Hampshire put on 117 for the loss of two wickets. Again yesterJay no play was possible until past one o’clock, and a drawn game was a foregone conclusion. H am psh ire . W . H. Maundell, b Capt. LEICESTERSHIRE v. ESSEX. Played at Leicester on August 6, 7 and 8. Drawn. Cricket wag out of the question at Leicester on Bank Holiday, but on Tuesday good progress was made with the match. On a slow wicket Leicester shire, wfco won the toss, made an excellent start, and if Mr. de Trafford had been allowed to stay a few minutes longer he would probably have quite demoralised the bowling. Mr. Wood played a steady an invaluable innings, an'i nearly everybody made a few runs, the tail playing up exceedingly well. All chance of a finish was practically over when Essex went in for little over an hour, for the Leicestershire bowling was not to be compared to that of Yorkshire. Mr. Owen played very attractive cricket, and Mr. Perrin followed his example, and when stumps were drawn the total was 80 for one wicket. Yesterday it was not possible to play until past three o'clock, and all interest in the match was very soon over. L eicestersh ire . F. W .
