324 CRICKET . A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 9, 1900. shire against W orcestershire at M an chester. I t is not necessary to reproduce here the list o f bow lers w ho have per form ed the feat in great matches, as the table was given in this colum n last season. Besides T rott’s achievem ent bu t little o f interest occurred in the cricketing w orld during the first part o f the week, so further remarks on current cricket are n o t needed. I t is very pleasing to see Shrew sbury d o ir g so w ell again. H is first three- figure innings in great matches was played as lo n g ago as 1876, and that he can still score heavily against the best b ow lin g in the coun try is shown by his recent innings o f 128 against Yorkshire. Those w h o have not been deceived b y the hu ge scores recorded during the past few years m aintain that n ext to “ W . Gr.” Shrew sbury is the finest batsm an the w orld has ever seen, and, h ig h though the praise m ay be, it is w ell deserved. F o r the benefit o f those w h o are inter ested in statistics I append a lisc o f Shrew sbury’s three-figure innings hit in first- class matches. SHREWSBURY’S CENTURIES IN FIRST-CLASS CRICKET. B ottin g, fo r wards a list o f players whom he thinks w ould have been chosen had there been occasion to put an E nglan d eleven into the field this season:—His list is as follows :—Abel, Hayward, E. E. Fos'er, J. B. Mason, C. B. Fry, Storer, K. S. Ranjitsinhji, G. L. Jessop, Hirst, Lock wood, and Bhodes. The above would prove an excellent team, although the inclusion of a slow bowler in place of Lockwood would probably make it stronger. I would suggest that either Briggs or Mead be substituted for the player mentioned, the former for choice, as he generally proves success'ul when chosen to participate in great matches. At Canterbury to-day will commence the match between Kent and Surrey, which has been set apart as a benefit for F. Martin, who, since his introduction into the team in 1885, has rendered great service to the county both with bat and ball. Granted fine weather, the match should prove a great success, as Surrey always attract a great attendance at the quaint old cathedral city, whilst the recent fine form displayed by the “ Men of Kent” will cause supporters of the county to assemble in large numbers. Martin’s best performances with the ball for Kent are appended :— 12 for 86, v. Surrey, at the Oval................... 1886 7 — 41, v. Notts, at Nottingham .................. 1886 3 — 3, v.
