Cricket 1900

A ug . 2, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 317 DERBYSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Glossop on July 30, 31 and Aug. 1. Lancashire won by 224 runs. It cannot have been a very pleasing experience to Mr. MacLaren to win the toss in this match, for the wicket was in a state which upset all calculatio «s Mr. MacLaren decided to bat first, but when half his side were out for 54 and seven wickets were down for 90, he must have thought that it would not have been a bad move to put Derbyshire in. The innings, how ever. was not yet over, for Cuttell lost ro time in making runs, a id the tail played up well. Still, it wai an inconsiderable total agaiast which Derbysh re had to go in. Storer and Chatterton played admir ably, the latter being not out 48 at the close of the day, when only three wickets were down for 148 Thus, when the game began on Tuesday morning, things looked par. icularly well for Derbyshire. but in a few minutes a great change came over the game, and nobody could make any stand aga'nst Cuttell and Briggs, the seven remaining wickets only producing 33 runs, so that after all Lancashire had a very small balance against them of 13 runs. As in the first innings Ward was soon disposed of, but Ty desley played a great game, while good cricket was shown by Mr. MacLaren, Mr. Eccles, and Mr. Hartley. The latter and Tyldesley in partnership astonished every body by the severity of their hitting. They were together for only an hour and a-half but put on 183 runs. They were particularly aggressive when Storer was on, scoring 18 off one over and 21 off another. This partnership put Lancashire on an entirely different footing and it looked as if they would be able to dictate terms. Bain fell in the night and ruined the wicket, and Derbyshire naturally did very badly, Bagshaw and Mr. Wright alone being able to offer any resistance to the bowling. L an cash ire . First innings.
