Cricket 1900

290 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 26, 1900. All England, at Manchester—which is said to be the only innings over a hun dred ever made against Freeman’s bowling except one by Dr. W . G. Grace. In his later years Mr. Daft very fre quently took part in local matches, and after he had passed his fiftieth birthday he made seventeen hundreds, including an innings of 222 in a match at Scar borough. He was once playing for Mr. C. W . Wright’s X I. against the Harrow Wanderers, who after making 493 for six wickets closed their innings and got out five of their opponents for 49. Mr. Daft was the survivor. He was joined by Mr. C. W . Wright, and both batsmen were promptly caught by the wicket keeper—the sort of catches which are unmistakable. Both were given not out, and both made over a hundred, saving the match with great ease. The generally-accepted date of Mr. Daft’s birth is November 2nd, 1836, but it is now given in “ Wisden ” as Novem ber 2nd, 1835, on the authority, I believe, of Mr. Arthur Haygarth. Be that as it may, Mr. Daft played his first match for Notts in 1858. In that year he played a fine innings of 44 not out against Surrey at the Oval, and from this time until 1880 he was a regular member of the team, nearly always making a good score, no matter how bad the wicket might b e ; and wickets were sometimes very bad indeed in those days. Bight times during this period he was at the head of the county averages. It was a characteristic of his batting that he was hardly ever bowled out, his wonderful eye enabling him to deal with shooters and bumping balls with equal ease. In 1879 he took a team of professionals to Canada and the United States, and brought it home after a triumphant tour, in which nine matches out of twelve were won and three drawn. In 1876 a complimentary match was played between North and South at Trent Bridge as a mark of the apprecia tion in which he was held by all classes of cricketers, and at the beginning of the following year a dinner was given in his honour in Nottingham, at which he was presented with a silver tea and coffee service, a solid silver salver, a purse of £500, and various other valuable memen toes, of which not the least in his estima tion was a fine silver tankard from Mr. John Walker, one of his greatest admirers. For many years he was the head of the well-known cricket and outfitting firm at Nottingham which was ran in his name, and was also proprietor of the Badcliffe- on-Trent Brewery, while for a couple of years he was the tenant of the Trent Bridge Hotel at Nottingham. Not so very long ago he wrote a series of articles, which first appeared in various news papers, and afterwards in a book entitled “ Kings of Cricket,” which is still, un doubtedly, one of the most popular books in cricket literature. Nor did he in later years confine his attention to cricket, for he accomplished the remark able feat of winning three prizes in lawn tennis tournaments after he was fifty years old. W. A.
