Cricket 1900

J u l y 19, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 283 On “ billiard table wickets,’’ he Never his skill displayed, Of knocks and bruises by the score, He never was afraid. But some there are who fear a blow, On knuckles or on shin, But such did not exist about The time of Alfred Mynn. A giant who, in days of yore, Pounded our ribs and thighs, On cricket ground and elsewhere too, No one could him despise. He’s gone ; but yet his name remains Among all lovers true, Of cricket as it once was played Before his face we knew. He loved the game for cricket ’self Majestic was his form, If he could only re-appear, He would the game adorn. A Titan among minnows small, “ Great Alfred ” did outshine His fellow labour ers in the field, And was almost divine. Tho’ oft with thumps and bruises sore We did some scores obtain, Eight well we knew that rutis off Mynn, Would surely add to fame. But few of those alive can tell The perils we did face, When “ Alfred ” of immortal name, A8 bowler took his place. “ Great Alfred,” we could write a score Of pages in thy praise, For only I, and a few more, Have seen thy great displays. Let j ealousy depart at once, To keep it were a sin, But never be one name forgot, “ The glorious Alfred Mynn.” Posterity still gladly sings, Declares through thick and thin, That every cricketer should join In praise of Alfred Mynn. “ An Old Harrovian,” too, attempts His fame to nourish still, Apotheosis is his place, ’Midst cricketers of skill. Yale 0 Yale, let us cry, Peace to his Manes, all There never has been, never will, His like with Bat and Ball. June, 1900.- “ A n O ld H a r r o v ia n .’ THE AB BE Y SCHOOL, BECKENHAM , v. P la y ed at O ld T ra fford on Ju ly 16 and 17. L ancashire w on b y 57 runs. The team which represented Lancashire in this ma*ch was distinctly strong, although'Mr. MacLaren, V*ard, and Mr. Fccles were absent. Nevertheless on the first day’s cricket the West Indians had reason to congratulate themselves, for, being only 13 runs tebind, they had obtained a wicke* in the second innings of 1 accashire for no runs \ efore stumps were drawn. The feature of the Lancashire innings was the battine of Mr. H. Cudworth, an amateur who plays for Barnsley; he plated a first-rate innings, hitting hard and well when opportunity offered, and was only at the wicket for two hours in making his 102. Except for a good innings of 34 by Tyldesley there was nothing elfe in the batting to call for commen', Mr. Mignon bowling with great success, m< re especially against the tail. The West Indians made an excellent show against the Lancashire bowling, but they had not tr> contend against Briggs who was given a r st. Mr. A. N. Hornby, who once more captained hi« old team, hurt himself when fielding on Monday, and his place (>*8 captain in the field) was taken by Mr. G. R. Bardswell, with the consent of the W f st Indians. Mr. Stanning, the Cambridge Blue, played good cricket on Tuesday morning. Tyldeeley again played a good innings and Briggs was in form, but the eleven was out for 182. leaving the West Indians to make 196runs to win. This time Briggs was turned on. and against him most of the visitors were uncomfortable, but Mr. Ollivierre played an extremely good innings. With a little luck the W est Indians might have pulled through. L ancashire . First innings. Second innings. J.
