Played at Edgbaston on July 12, 13 and 14. Drawn. When play ended in this match, Warwickshire who had given a fine all round exhibition of cricket, had decidedly the best of the game, for with nine wickets in hand they only required 137 runs to win. Field bowled admirably for them in the second innings. L an c a sh ir e . First innings. Ward, b Field ................ In the earlier stages of this match the bowlers had the best o f matters, but t-uch admirable cricket was played by William Gunn in the Notts second innings that when play began on Saturday morning the home team seemed exceedingly likely to win easily. Gunn played in quite his old and best style, his innings of 137 being put together in three hours and twenty minutes, his hitting after he had reached his hundred being particularly fine. V* hen stumps were drawn on Friday evening Notts, with five wickets iu hand, were leading by *99 runs, and on Saturday morning Mr. Jones declared at a quarter to one, leaviug Kent to make i59 in five minutes less than five hours, a task which was by no means impossitle. Kent deliberately set about to try to make the runs, and so determined was the batting that ihe Notts captain must have wished over and over again that he had delayed to close the innings for half an hour. Ihe greatest performance on ihe Kent side was the 130 by Mr. Baker, who for two hours and three quarters kept ahead of time, always playing beautiful cricket. Mr. Day and Mr. Mason also played splendid innings, and so well had everything gone for Kent (who had profited by the inability of Wass to bowl through a strain) that with five wickets in hand and an hour to play they had only 29 runs to make. It seemed a certiinty that they would win with consummate ease. Then W ass, for whom a substitute had been fielding, returned and took the ball. In half an hour Notts had won, Wass taking three of the last five wickets in four overs for eight runs. It was an extraordinary finish. N o tts . First innings. Played at Leicester on July 12, 13 and 14. Drawn. This was certainly in its way the most astonishing match of the season. When Leicestershire were able to close their innings for 609 for eight wickets, they probably had not great hopes of being able to get rid of Fussex twice before Saturday night, but it cannot have occurred to them that their own total would be beaten, and that they would not get rid of Sussex even one,*. From the very beginning the Leicester shire batsmen trei e masters of the situati m. Mr. de Trafford set a good example to his men by scoring 34 in half an hour, and for the rest of the day the scoring was rapid. Mr. Wood, who played a great game, had much to do with the success of the men who followed him, for, while not taking as long as usual to make his runs, he had worn out the bowling long before he was dismissed. When Knight and Whitehead came together at a quarter past three there were only three wickets down, and no more fell
