In the course of the first half hour they lost half their wickets for 31 runs, tut Ranjitsinhii and Mr. Brann then made a stand, and played the only cricket which was likely to be successful on the wicKet, while Relf aftei wards did well. But all were out by luncheon, when the total was 94 for seven wickets. Then the rain came down, and there was no more play. Shrewsbury and Mr. A. O. Jones, on Tuesday, played so well that Notts had a big lead, the former showing, as nearly always, a mastery over the bowling, although it was very difficult, while the latter played his own attractive game. One end of the wicket was particularly difficult. At the close of play on Tuesday Sussex had lost Mr. Collins, and the total was 28, so that they were still 83 runs behind. Three valuable wickets were lost before the runs were knocked off, and then Ranjitsinhji played one of his inimitable innings, seeming to find no difficulty in the bowling or the wicket. Me leceived valuable assist ance from several of his team, but if he had fallen it would have been a bad look out for the county. It was a brilliant inniags under difficulties. He was able to declare, but there was not time to get Notts out. S u ssex . First innings. Marlow, b J. Gunn ........... 0 A. Collins, b Wass ........... 6 Killick, b Wass ................... 8 K. 8. A t the end of a full day’s ciicket on a soft but not very difficult wicket, Kent were in a position to con gratulate themselves, for they had made a good score and had got rid of Brown and Den con pretty cheaply. The stand of the Kent innings was made by Mr. P. C. Baker and Mr. Mason, who quite mastered the bowl ing, plajing excellent cricket. Alec Hearne also played a most us.ful innings. The tail collapsed before Haigh and Khodes. Tunnicliffe, fur Y ork shire, gave a very steady exhibition of cricket until stumps were drawn, being not out 31. Yorkshire had made 59 for two wicke s. There was no play on Tuesday owing to rain. Yesterday, Kent had a race against time for victory, but though they got York shire out cheaply, and declared in their second innings, the Yorkehiremen, for whom Hirst played a fine first innings, were always safe.
