M.C.C. AND GROUND v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Played at Lord’s on July 2 and 3. Abandoned. In the course of an hour and a-half \ efore luncheon, which was all the time available for cricket on M on day, ( xford 8CoredS8 runs fo r the loss of six wickets, five of which fell to Trott, who, on a difficult wicket, was in great form. The only man who was at all successful against him was Mr. H. C. Pilkington, who went in fiist and carried his bat for a fine innings of 43. He received considerable assistance from Mr. Crawfurd, who was not out at 14. The partnership was 80 '>n broken on Tuesday morning, and the total was carried to 1C6. The M.C.C. had just time to begin their innings, when, before a run had been scored, the rain came down, and the match, which was arranged for only two days, was abandon ed. O xford U n iv e r sity . White ...........1 1 0 0| More ... 0'2 0 0 0 SOMERSET v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Liverpool on July 2 and 3. Lancashire won by an innings and 132 runs. On a very slow wicket cricket was played on the Aigburth ground until lunch, which was taken at twenty minutes to two o’ clock. In the course of an hour and a half’s batting before this Somerset had done very badly. They lost their first four wickets for 19 runs, all to Mold. Then a stani by Mr. Bernard and Lewis made things better, and the two batsmen brought the score to 49 before the rain came. A t twenty minutes to six play was resumed, and when stumps were drawn Somerset had made 85 for the loss of eight wickets. The innings was soon finished off on Tuesday, and then Mr. MacLaren and Ward gave a very fine jxhibition of batting, putting on 159 runs before they were parted. Both in their respective styles played the very best of cricket, Mr. MacLaren being brilliant. Tyldesley and Briggs added considerably to the total, and with the score at 276 for five wickets, Mr. MacLaren boldly declared his innings, being 172 runs to the good. His policy was completely justified, for, on a most difficult wicket, Somersetshire collapsed, none of their hitters being able to get a start, or things might have gone differently. S om erset .
