Cricket 1900

J uly 5, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 247 WARWICKSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Portsmouth on June 28, 29 and 30. Warwickshire won by 143 runs. Perhaps the beat cricket shown during this match was by Mr. G. B. Raikes in the Hampshire second innings ; he m?de a splendi I attempt to save his side from defeat. He also bowled with great success in the tirst innings against the Warwickshire tail. The small lead which Hampshire possessed in the first innings was soon wiped off, and nearly every man on the Warwickshire side added considerably to a swell ing total, so that when Hampshire went ia for the fourth innings of the match tLere were 316 runs to be made. Some rain fell just after the innings com menced, and afterwards things went badly for Hamp shire, no one except Mr. Raikes being able to do much with the bowling. W a r w ic k sh ir e . THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE MATCH. Played at Bristol on June 28, 29 and 30. Gloucestershire won by an innings &216 runs. A t the beginning of this mitnh the visitors did pretty well, but unfortunately for them the three best bats in the team all came off. and after Mr. Townsend and Wrathall had added i09 tuds to the total in partnership for the fifth wicket, Mr. Jessop came in aud completely knocked the bottom out of the bowling. Mr. Jessop, at the commencement of his innings, hit five balls in an over to the boundary ; he made his fifty in twenty minutes, his hundred in forty-three minutes, and his 157 in an hour. Twenty- nine 4’s were among his hits. Against a total of 619 the visitors could make n o headway, and collapsed in the first inniD gs, but in the second they played up wonderfully well, Mr. Constantine, Mr. Ollivierre and several other men showing very attractive cricktt. Two men for Winchester and one for Eton played excellent cricket in both innings. Mr. L. G . Cruwys was the mainstay of the Winchester team, his scores in each innings being made by very sound cricket, while Mr. K. O. Hunter most ably batted for the honour cf the tail. The feature of the Eton batting was the excellent display of Mr. H. J. Longman, while Lord Dalmeny and Mr. Lambert also dis tinguished themselves. In Mr. McDonell Winchester possesses a bowler o f more than average merit. W in c h e ste r . First innings. L. G. Cruwys. b Gallwey ... 52 R. W . Awdry, b Bernard ... 1 A . C.
