246 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 5, 1900. ESSEX v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Leyton on June 28, 29 and 30. Drawn. Under the impression that the wicket was consider ably in favour of the bowlers when play began on Thursday. Mr. Lucas decided to put Derbyshire in first when be won the toss. The result must have surprised even Mr. Lucas, with all his many years of experience, for after the first two Derbyshire bats men, Mr. W iight and Pagshaw. had played with exceeding care for some time, obviously expecting to find the wicket remarkably difficult, they began to make the most of their opportunity, finding no reason whey they should not let themselve go. It was an unplea-ant surprise for Essex to see them watching the ball with eas*. and punishing every looie one with impunity, until at lunch lime they had brought th^ total to 135 without being separated. Off the first ball after lunch Bagshaw was caught deep by the wicket-keeper for an admirable 55. Essex had now a very Ion*? peri jd of waiting for something to turn up while Mr W right and Storer w rj together, but it was not until the scare had been increased by 19S, and the total to 333, that an accident happened, and Mr. W right was ca ght at mid-on for a beautiful innings of 170, which had been put together in four hours, during the greater p «rt of which he was so lame that he had a man to run for him. After this the bowlers began to make a little headway, but when the day’s play ended the s o re had been taken to 434 for five wickets, Storer being not out 136. Possibly if Derby shire had been able to declare they might have had a chance of winning—but only possibly. As it was the inniogs was brought to a conclusion half an hour or so before lunch. Storer, who was at the wicket for five hours, was never in any difficulties with the bowling, whiie Foulkes made a very successful debut. It was pretty evident before the close of the day that unless heavy rain fell Essex would easily get out of the hole into which they had placed themselves. They scored 273 for four wickets, Mr. McOahey being not out 69 and Mr. Kortright not out 37. Carpenter had played another beautiful innings o f 112; he was at the wickets for three hours. The rest of th? match was only remarkable for the batting of Mr. McGahey, who played steadily and successfully for a draw. Be was batting for f ur hours and ten minutes, and the tail, although they did not m ike many runs, kept up their wickets in a dogg d manner which placed defeat out of the question. Derbyshire went in again for two balls only and then declared, but there was not the slightest chance of getting Essex out. DERBY8HIBB. The all-conquering Lancashire team seemed likely to meet with their first defeat of the season after an innings each had been played, but when rain stopped play on Saturday afternoon, there was very little in it. Indeed, as Ward and Mr. Hartley were well in, and seven wickets were stillin hand with only 113 runs to be made, thechances are thatMiddlesex would have met with ahother defeat if rain had not come on at half-past four. Yorkshire won by 140 rnns. A fine innings by Hirst, who scored 106 in a couple of hours on a queer wicket, had much to do with the success of his county ; but no one was prepared for the collapse of Somerset in the second innings against Rhodes and Haigh. But the wicket was by this time immensely in favour of the two bowlers, who, under such circumstances, are as difficult to cope with as any in the world. Y o r k sh ir e . First innings.
