Cricket 1900

J u n e 28, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 237 WARWICKSHIRE v. GLOUCESTER SHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on June 25, 26 and 27. Gloucestershire won by seven wickets. There w « no play on Monday owing to raia. On Tuesday, Warwickshire won the toss, and on a slow wicket the two Quaifes gradually wore down the bowling. A t lunch-time the score was 143 for three wickets, W . Quaife being out for an excellent innings of 71, while W . G. Quaife was not out 50. The scoring still went on afterwards and the two hundred was soon passed. Mr. Bainbridge played a very good innings, but although some of the tail made runs, the total fell short of what was promised. Gloucester shire began well enough, Mr. Townsend and ^ rathall playing fine cricket for the first wicket, tut afterwards, only Mr. Jessop and Board could do any thing with the towling, for the wicket was getting difficult. Warwickshire, with a lead of 65, collapsed in th° second innings, leaving Gloucestershire to make 128 runs. For a time it looked as if they would accomplish their task for the loss of only one wicket, but when the runs were nearly made, two other wickets fell. Mr. Sewell, W rathall and Mr. Jessop all played a winning game. W a r w ic k sh ir e . First innings. Charlesworth, b Brown ... Quaife (W .), c Board, b Roberts ........................... T. 8. FIFTH OF THE TOUR. * Played at Northampton on June 25, 26 and 27. West Indians won by 61 runs. For the first time during their tour the West Indians had the pleasure of winning the toss and batting first on a slow but not very difficult wicket, giving an excellent account of themselves. The team which oppose d them was about the weakest that they have met, for it was by no means easy to get men from any other county except Northamptonshire, which provided seven of the eleven. The batting was on the whole of a very steady kind, the most useful innings being played by Mr. Ollivierre, who was at the wickets two hours for 69. Mr. Cox played the best cricket. When stumps were drawn the t>tal was 184 for 7 wickets. As usual, Thompson played a good innings for the Counties, and once more the visitors were headed on the flr.u incings. But thanks almost entirely to the fine bat ting of Mr. Hinds and Mr. Cox, they were able to put their opponents in to make 115 on a very tricky wicket. Woods. Burton, an t Mr. Mignon were irre sistible, and the W est Indian team won its first match. W est I ndians . Firfct.innings. C.A. Ol’ivierre, b Thomp on 69 G. C.
