Cricket 1900

34 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 28, 1900. went. Successive balls however got rid of the two remaining wickets, so that the result was a tie. An odd incident occurred during the fijst innings of Oxford against Surrey at the Oval on Tuesday. Mr. Cbaropain returned a ball to Richardson. Neither umpire could see whether tbe ball was caught or whether it touched the ground, and neither could give a decision. The batsman walked away satisfied that he was really caught, but at the request of Mr. Jephson, who went to him in the pavilion, came back and resumed his innings. Of course as neither umpire would give a decision, the batsman was not out, and there is no more to be said. Me. W . E. “W illiams , when playing for Forest Hill v. Private Banks was no balled. The ball was returned to him by the batsman and caught by him. But seeiDg that the batsman at his end had backed up too far he put the wicket down, and of course the decision of the umpire, George Hearne, sen., was “ run out.” But for the moment Hearne was quite taken aback by the rarity of such an occurrence.
