C r i c k e t : A WEBELY RECORD OF TEE GAME. 168, UPPER THAMES STREET, L0 ID 0 I, E.C . THURSDAY, JUNE 2 8 t h , 1900. $ a \ u l i o n The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet. O n the first day of the match between Hampshire and Yorkshire, at Hull, Rhodes took his hundredth wicket. He is the first bowler who has accomplished ihe feat this season, and no one else is near to him. He must wish that the Australians had made their visit in 1900 instead of 1899. T h e West Indian cricketers have now played infive matches. They have lost the toss four times, and have never until this week really had a chance of playing on equal terms with any of their opponents. Mr. Constantineisthe firstof theirbatsmen who has scored a hundred ; he made 113 in the second innings against the Gentle men of the M.C.C., at a time when his side seemed certain of an ignominious defeat. T he re-appearance of Lord Harris at Lord’s was quite an event. He showed all his old abilities as a captain, and managed admirably what little bowling he had at his disposal. His batting was excellent. H a y w a r d still leads in the aggregate scores, and he and Ranjitsinhji are the only men who have yet made their thousand runs this season. Mr. Fry with 946, and Mr. Jessop with 986, are not far behind. Others who might possibly accomplish the feat 1his week are Abel (889), Brown, sen. (814), Car penter (879), and Mr. C. J. B. Wood (839). A t e a m of Sydney cricketers went to the Richmond and Clarence for the Easter holidays, says an Australian con temporary, and at Lismore they met a man (Balmer by name) who bowled grubbers, and took five of the wickets for one run. Thereupon they appear, accord ing to accounts, to have sulked. They complained that against such bowling they could not give “ an exhibition of first-class modem cricket,” and that underarm bowling is “ quite obsolete.” Finally, they would not field or bowl properly themselves, and the local cap tain took his men off the field; and now a prominent official who was with the Sydneyites says that the playing of this bowler will “ prevent the visit of another team.”
