W hen slumps were drawn the total was 316, and as there was a strong probability that the wicket would be more difficult on Saturday, 8omerset were in a very tight place. Mr. MacLar^n declared at once on Saturday, leaving Somerset to make 165 runs before drawing level. There was never much chance that they would do thii», although Tyler and Cranfield for the last wicket gave a lot cf trouble. S om erset . First innings. L. C. H. Played at the Oval on June 21, 22 and 23. Drawn. No play was possible on Thursday in this match. Surrey had such a lead on Friday night that they seemed to have their visitors at their mercy, for on a slow wicket they made an excellent score, thanks chitfly to their two great batsmen, and got rid of four of the best Cambridge men for 53. 'Ihe remaining six wickets gave but little trouble, and Cambridge being 224 runs behind had to follow on. Moon then played splendid cricket, but up to lunch time Cambridge seemed in for a bad defeat. The batting of Mr. Tayior. however, put a different appearance on the game, for which the Surrey men have to thank their poor fielding, as they managed to miss him four or five times. Nevertheless his innings was a fine display of powerful batting ; he was at the wickets for ttxree hours and a quarter, and saved his side from defeat. But despite all he could do, Cambridge were only 10 runs runs on with the last two men in three-quarters of an hour before time. A stand for the last wicket by Mr. Fargus and Mr. Hind settled the matter, for with 37 runs added in twenty-one minutes to the score, Surrey had to make 48 runs in thirteen minutes, and although the hitters were given a chance, the thing could not be done. This was a bowlers’ match, in which the batsmen who distinguished themselves were Arnold, King and Mr. H. K. Foster. Worcestershire had nine wickets down for 160 on Thursday night, very little play being possible. On Friday morning the innings was soon over, and then Leicestershire had a most disbe irtening time on a very difficult wicket, seven wickets being down in little more th vn half an hour for 35 runs. An invaluable stand was made by King and Geeson, and as the last man also kept in for some time. King was enabled to add largely to his score; and as a result his county were only 21 runs behind. W ood- cock bowled with great success in the Worcestershire second innings, aud when stumps were drawn Leices ter, hire, with all their wickets in hand, only required 103 to win. The finish on Saturday was very exciting, but the wicket was too difficult for Leicestershire to make the runs. W orcestershire . First innings Arnold, b W oodcock...........
