Cricket 1900

J o n e 21, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 221 T H E W E S T INDIAN TEAM . THE WARWICKSHIRE MATCH. THIRD OF THE TOUR. Plaved at Birmingham on June 18, 19 and 20. Warwickshire won by an innings and 111 runs. For the thir<l time in succession the visitors lost the t<ss and although Warwickshire included several men in their team who are not regular members of it, the batsmen noon go‘ such a complete mas eiy over the bowling that runs came w.th as much eafe as in an o-dinary e ub ma'ch. The only bowler who met with much su<*ofss was Mr. Ollivierre. Mr. J. E. Bill, who h is made his first appearance f«»r the c- unty tLis season, was batting f. r three hours a -d twenty minut s. at.d- his fine innings included nineteen 4’s. Th^ tail made things very lively, buc with the ex ception of » r. Bill and Lilley no one managed to reach his tifty. At the close of the first day’s play the total was 4'6 for nine wickets. This was increased by 10 on the following morning. Extras amounted to no ftwer than 50. The West Indian team, tired wi h and unaccustomed to fielding against such big totals in all their three matches, were not seen to advantage when they went in. Up to the present th-y have had no equal chances with their opponents, and their true foim has yet to be setn. Mr. Cox and Mr. Sproston have however shown that they are very fine bat.snv n indeed. r* W arwickshire . T.S.Fishwick.cWoods, b M ig n on ................. 16 Quaife (W . LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Bristol on June 18, 19 and 20. Drawn. Mr. MacLaren, having played himself into form, is now once more a very difficult man to di>pose of. Be was in great form on Monday, and in partnership with Ward he made 157 runs for the first wicket. W ard was missed before he had scored—a mistake which had immense influence on the result. Most of the batsmen played good cricktt, but no other big score was made. Gloucestershire, with a few minutes to bat, lost a couple of wickets for 13 runs, but on Tuesday morning Mr. Sewell played sp endid cricket, and afterwards Mr. Townsend and Mr. Jes«>p gained a mastery over the bowling. The la. ter scored 82 out of 104 for the sixth wickec in fifty minutes—a very powerful innings indeed. There was some good cricket when Lancashire went in again, but when stumps were drawn on Tuesday, five wickets were down for 145, so that a good finish seemed probable. But yesterday, Ward and Mr. Hartley upset all calculations, and by splendid cricket gave Lancashire an immense advantage. Mr. MacLaren declared at half-past three, leaving Gloucestershire to make 449 runs to win. Wrathall played well, tnd sj did Mr. Jessop. L ancashire . First innings. Second innings. A. C.
