J u n e 21, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 219 © o m s s p o n B e n c e . The Editor does not hold himself responsible for the opinions o f his correspondents. To the E ditor o f C r ic k e t . S ir ,— The remarks in your current issue as to to the necessity for an alteration in the law affecting the incident at the Oval on the 11 th inst. will, I think, be cordially welcomed by all lovers of the game. At the same time, injustice to the umpire on that occasion, one of the most experienced cricket experts of the day, I would, with all respect, submit that neither he nor any other umpire could have acted on Law 43 as to the question of fair or unfair play, in the manner you suggest, in this particular case. An umpire’s duty is to administer the existing law, not to amend it or enact new laws, and the direction in Law 43 refers to ** fair or unfair ” play, and not to practices which, however sharp, cannot be said to be illegal. Unless, therefore, the umpire had reason to suspect the wicket-keeper of deliberate cheating (and this has never been suggested for a moment) I fail to see how he could have invoked Law 43without exceeding his duty. Apologising for troubling you, I am, Sir, yours obediently, A n O n lo o k e r f o r 30 Y e a r s . [We expressly stated in the clearest language that neither the wicket-keeper nor the umpire is, in our opinion, to blame in such a case. The umpire might apply Law 43 (he is the sole judge of fair and unfair play), without reflecting on the wicket-keeper or anyone else; for it is obviously unfair that a man, who, at the wicket farthest from the pavilion, mis understands a*) decision should be out, when he would not be out if he were at the wicket nearest to it.] v. The Worcestershire men did not by any means in this match keep up the batting form which they had shown against the W est Indian team, but the wicket had not recovered from the heavy rains, and it was rather a disadvantage to bat first as things turned out. Before play ended for the day, Oxford disposed of them, and completed an innings themselves, Mr. J. W . Crawfurd being the only b tsman who greatly distinguished himself. Worcestershire, with a bal ance of 80 against them, did fairly well in the second innings, thanks to Mr. Foster and Arnold, and made a good fight for it before they were beaten. W orcestershire .
