2 1 2 CRICKET : A WEEKLY KEUOKD OK THE GAME. J une 21, 1&00. T H E W E S T INDIAN TEAM. THE WORCESTERSHIRE MATCH. SECOND OF THE TOUR. Played at Worcester on June 14, 15 and 16. Worcestershire won by 215 runs. So far ihe visitors have not fo'lowed the excellent example set by the A ustralians of generally winning the toss \»h*-n it has been of advar tage to them to do so. .At Worcester it was decidedly well to win the toss, bot Mr. sproston, who in Mr. Warner’s absence was ac iug as captain, was no more fortunate than the latter at the Crystal Palace. A t times Woods bowled extiemely w* 11tn I, what i-< of mor •import ance, Le was successful, but on the whole the b tUmen had much tbe b st of it, making their runs easily and quickly. When the visitors batted they were a good deal puzzled by Pearson, and the regular bowlers were only put on as charges When stumps were drawn they had lose six wickets for 85, Mr. bproston and Mr. Cox being not out. On a wicket which had been more or less affected by rain these two batsmen continued their innings and gave a fi-ie exhibition cf cricket, but despite their effoits tht total was 120 behind that of W orcester, who in their second innings again made runs easiiy. A t tbe close of the day the visitor' had lost four wickets for 61 (Mr. Learmond having anown attractive cricket), and were thus veiy much out of he running. Mr. Hinds and Mr. Cox made a fine effort to put a better appearance on the game, but *hen they were separated the match was soon over. W orcestershire . First innings. Played at Leyton on June 14 and 15. Yorkshire won by 6 wickots. W hat m ight have happened in this mafch if Essex had not missed hali-a-dozen catches in the Yorkshire first innings is a matter for speculation, but unques- tionably this made a lot of difference to the result. Except Mr. Lucas and Tunnicliffe, the only batsmen who in the lea*t distinguished themselves were the men who generally distinguish themselves on a towlere.’ wicket: viz.. those * lio hit hard hnd often. Air. Lucas is an exception to all rules, and it does not seem to matter 1o him whether the wi' ket is gcod or bad, for he learned his cricket at a time when runs had generally to b.j ^ ught for. In both innings of Essex he played a plendid game. The only other me who played the right game with success w re Buckenham, who in the first innings, when .Rhodes was carrying everything before him, adopted bold tactics and j-1 yed a must valuable innings of 52; while Mead in tbe second innings, when h s side eemed in an absolutely hopeleMa position, hit so boldly, acd without counting the risk he was running, that while he w«s in partnership witn Mr. Lucas 77 runs were put on in three-quarters of an hour. T ie Yoikshiremen •who were successlu1were alsothemen who cin hit, with the *xceptiun of Tunnicliffe, who like Mr. Lucas can play on all linds of wickets. Perhaps the saddest thing about this match, from the point of view of Essex men, was the dismissal of both Mr. Perrin and Mr. McUahey for a couple of duck’s eggs each. On paper it would appear tha Yorkshire had the easiest of victories, but, ms a matter of fact, t*iey had to thank an c pportune storm for gttting them out of a very awkward position. When they went in a second time t make 101 runs to win they lost three wickets for 24 runs, and looked very m ch like lo-ing the match. Then the rain came to their a i 1, and when the game was resumed the bowlers were at a cisadvantage. E ssex . First innings. Second innings. C. Played at Brighton on June 14, 15 and 16. Drawn. On a slow wicket SuBSrx began very well indeed in 1his match with Mr. Fry and Mr. Collins, who put up 70 for the first wicket. But at this period of the game Mr. A. O. Jones was put on to bowl and met with astonishing success, disposing of Mr. Fry, Mr. Collins and Ranjiteinhji in a few minutes, his catch of Ranjitsinhji off a very hot return being a very fine piece of fielding. Relf afterwards played a most valuable innings and saved his side, from a collapse. Notts lost Mr. Jones before stump* were drawn with the to al at 15. Owing to raiu there was no play on Friday, and on Saturday there was never any chance of finishing the match. The most attractive cricket of the d y was shown by Vine and Butt, who put on 79 runs in three-quarters of an hour for the eighth Sussex wicket w.thout being separated. S ussex . First innings. C. B.
