Cricket 1900
J u n e 31, 1900. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 189 SURREY y. NOTTS. ARTHUR SHREWSBURY’ S BENEFIT MATCH. Played at Trent Bridge on June 4, 5, and 6 . Surrey won by 4 wickets. Since 1876 Shrewsbury has played with very great success for Notts, and it is not surprising that as the proceeds of his first I eneflt match were small the committee should s t apart half the receipts in the Surrey match this year. He was more successful on the openiDg day than are most professionals in their benefit matches, but when he seemed to have mastered all the changes in the Surrey bowliDg he misj udged a ball from brockwell, and, not attempting to play at it. was bowled for a very good 27. He and Gunn, who had been his partner during nearly the whole of his innings, were out at the same total—a very fine thing for the visiting team. Afterwards there was some good cricket by Mr. Dixon and Mr. Groves, but the total fell far short of what had been anticipated when Notts won the toss. Surrey could hardly have had a more disastrous start, for Hayward and Brockwell were out for 11 runs between them. Abel and Mr. Crawfoid then played defensive cricket, and when the latter was out for 15 Mr. Jephson did well. It is interesting to note that Abel scored the very large proportion, for him, of 46 out of 6 1 runs made while he was at the wicket. When stumps were drawn Surrey were still 94 runs behind with five wickets in hand. Excellent cricket by Mr. Jephson, and useful scores by all the tail, gave them a lead of 38 on tbe first innings, a lead which was soon knocked off by Shrewsbury and Mr. Jones, who put up 69 for the first wicket. Kuos had, however, to be fought for, and although several batsmen did well enough, Mr. Jones, Mr. Dixon and Mr. J. Gunn were the only ones who met with great success. Richardson bowled in something like his old form, and it is evident that on a wicket which helps the bowler a little, he is still a valuable man. Surrey had to make 261 in less than four hours. They lost Hayward at once, and although Abel. Mr. Crawford, and Mr. Jephson all played good cricket, Notts for a Ion* time seemed to have a very good chance of winning. But Lockwood upset all calculations, and playtd a splendid and bold innings of 74, which turned the scale in favour of Surrey, and as he met with valuable assistance his county was enabled to win a most interesting match by four wicket?. For the first time for years Dr. Grace was not included in the Gloucestershire team for the W hit- M onda/ match at Brighton. Despite a very fine innings by Killick, who made 94 in two hours and forty minutes, Sussex did not do well on the whole for some time, six wickets being down for 182. Then Ranjitsinbji and Marlow came together and by ad mirable cricket put on 158 in partnership in a couple of hours, and quite altered the appearance of the game. Ranjitsinhji, who only missed his hundred by three runs, was not able to run quickly owing to the strain from which he has been suffering for a week or two, but he played a great game. At the close of the day the total was 366 for seven wickets. This was increased by 25 runs on the following morning. Gloucestershire lost Mr Hodgkins and Mr. Town send very quickly, but Wrathall and Board took charge of the bowliag and scored rapidly. When they were separated Mr. Jessop took up the running. Until he could feel his way he played with care, but when once he had take . the measure of the bowling there was no stopping him. Runs were put on at an alarming rate, the score was advanced from 200 to 300 in thircy-five minutes, and in an hour and three- quarters Mr. Jessop made 179, the total in that time being increased by 257 runs. Mr. Brown also played fine cricket, and while Roberts was in partnership with him 4 runs were put on in fifty-five minutes. Gloucestershire had a le id of 105 runs, 26 of which were knocked off without loss by Sussex before the day’s play ended. Yesterday there was never the slightest chance of ft ishing the game, for nearly all the Sussex men were iu brilliant form, and the bowlers had a bad time cf it. In the course of the match 1,310 runs were made for thirty wickets. S u ssex . First innings. A.
