Cricket 1900

180 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. J u n e 7, 1900. centuries hit by a gentleman who had but one arm. Mr. Casswell was educated at the Surrey County School, Cranleigh, and was a really splendid batsman. M b . C a s s w k ll’s C h ie f C r ic k e t S c o r e s . 174*, Plant’s X I. v. W yle’s X I., at Broadwater, July 12, 1878. 165*, Surrey County School v. Old Boys, at Cran- leigh, May 18, 1880. 149, Surrey County School v. 3rd Batt. Queen’s Regiment, at Cranleigh, June 11, 1883. 112, Surrey County School v. Broadwater, at Broad water, July 15, 1882. I ll, Surrey County School v. Burlington, at Broad water, July 7, 1883. 101* Surrey County School v. Broadwater, at Cran leigh, May 23, 1883. Those who were present at the recent match between Sussex and Gloucestershire were indeed fortunate, for from beginning to end the game was full of interest. The batting of Marlow on the opening day proved highly popular. At no time during his innings did he make a mistake, and it is to be hoped that in future the Sussex authorities will play him more regularly than has been the case for some time past. Ranjitsinhji, taking into account his sprained thigh, played a very notable innings, his runs being obtained chiefly by boundaries and singles, the latter of which he was obliged to walk. It was on the second day, however, that the brightest cricket was seen, Mr. Jessop playing one of his hard-hit innings. He scored 50 runs in forty-five minutes, 100 in sixty-five, and altogether 179 out of 257 in a hundred minutes. At times the Gloucestershire score was advanced at a marvellous pace, the total being taken from 142 to 222 in thirty minutes, and from 200 to 300 in thirty-five minutes. Daring the day 547 runs were obtained for the loss of thirteen wickets, which I believe is the largest number ever scored in one day at Hove. All cricketers must be pleased that Hearne has had such genial weather for his benefit match at Lora’s ; but however fine the weather and however good the cricket shown in the match it would have been impossible for him to have received more than his deserts. That the cricket was of interest throughout is certain. Mr. Hill’s hurricane hitting on the first day must have delighted the crowd. Never before has he hit in so brilliant a manner. He obtained 51 out of 54 in twenty-three minutf s, and in all 72 (sixteen 4’s) out of 75 in thirty-five minutes. Seldom indeed is such sensational hitting seen in a great match. On the second day the batting of Mr. Stoddart furnished a subject for conversation, it is so rarely that one is fortunate enough to see him bat nowadays, that one cannot help most earnestly hoping that he will play regularly for his county in future. To refer to all the great batting triumphs of the last few days would far exceed the space at command, but White head and Messrs. Burnup and McGahey must be congratulated on making their highest scores in first-class matches, Mr. Burnup especially, inasmuch as his 200 is a record for Kent. W estm inster S ch ool .
