1 7 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 3 1 , li> 0 0 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. SOMERSET. A REMARKABLE INNINGS BY BOARD. Played at Bristol on May 28 and 29. Gloucestershirewon by an inningsand 38 runs. A partnership of 130 by Mr. C. A. Bernard and Mr. A . E. Newt*>n, who both played woadeifully good cricket, gave promise that the Somersetshire total would te large, but Roberts, who has distinguished himself this year, \*as far 1o » gocd for the tail, and the total was only 2. 8. When stumps were drawn Gloucesterphire, for the loss of six wickets, had but 26 runs to make to be level. Mr. Jessop played a brilliant innings, and scored 52 in twenty minutes. Board was also in good form, and scored his first fifty in five minutes less than a hour, and was not out 64. On Tuesday he plaved altogether remarkable cricket, hitting mo t brilliantly all round the wicket, ard keeping most of the bowling to himself, scored ten after ten while his partners were almost looking on. rl hanks chiefly to his vigorous play Gloucestershire had a lead of 176 ru n s-a lead which was altogether too much for Somersetshire, who did very little in the second innings. Board’s 214 was put together in three hours and twenty-five minutes. So badly did Somerset fare in their second innings against Paish and Roberts, that Board’s innings seems all the more wonderful by comparison. A collection was made on the ground for Board realised £17 lls. S om erset . First innings. L. C. H. Palairet, c Roberts, b Jessop ................... C. A. Played at Maidstone on May 28 and 29. Kent won by an innings and 4 runs. Fresh from their famous victory o\er Surrey, the Fssex men could hardly have anticipated tin t they would be deoisive'v beaten by a Kent eleven which, a» usual at this time of the year, was. at least on piper, somewhat weak but the condition of the ground, and iLe changes in the weather had some thing to do with the result. Essex, cn a pitch which Lad not recovered fr« m the r%in, made a tad start, and although Carpenter played fine defensive cricket, and Young considerably increased the total when matters looked desperately bad, the total was very small against the fowling of Alec Hearne and Mr. Mason. Kent made a much better beginning, but after the first wi ket had fallen, the bowlers began to get the upper hand, finding in Mr. Mason alone an opponent ab e to cope successfully with them. V\hen stumps were drawn, Kent had a lead of 70 runs, with two wickets in hand. Thus there was nothing very disheartening in the position of the game for Essex. But instead of improving, as was expected, the wicket on Tuesday bfcame worse. Nevertheless, Mr. Mason, who had overnight scored 74, managed to increase his total to 117, although he received no assistance from the other two men in the shape of runs ; he played a wonderfully fine innings on the whole, and scored quickly on Tuesday morn ing. Tnanks chiefly to him, Kent h»d a very useful lead of 117 runs, and it was generally thought that Essex Wr*re in a tight place. No one, however, looked f*>r the complete breakdown in the batting which followed. It was a rout, and Carpenter and Mead alone upheld the honour of their county. E sse x . First innings.
