Cricket 1900

M a y 3 1 , 190 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 1?1 his physical strength that, at forty-seven, he still looked young; and he was young, chival rous, daring, and, in a life of commerce, he retained schoolboy honour in matters com mercial. I’robably his happiest hour was when riding through fire, with French, to the relief of Kimberley. In his undergraduate days there was a great explosion of boyish ppirits at his college. Several men were rus ticated. He went to the head of his College and announced that he was deeply concerned in the affair, and insisted on being ‘ ‘ sent down,” a fate which would have been most injurious to his interests. I think he failed, but such was his character to his dying day, that of a modern Bayard. As such he fell, an example to all men of patriotism, energy, and chivalrous courage, and self-sacrifice. Cricketers will recognise in the subject of Mr. Lang’s touching tribute C. W. Boyle, who was in the Clifton College X I. in the early seventies and played for Oxford in 1873. He also represented England v. Scotland in Rugby football in the same year. Personally, I should have said that there had been many bowlers quite as fast. T h e accounts in Tuesday’s dailies of the occupation of Senekal by General Bundle’s force make conspicuous mention of a brave deed by Sergeant Boiler, of the Middlesex Yeomanry. The war tele gram in the Daily Express tells how Sergeant Boiler dragged a wounded man across his horse and carried him off under a heavy fire. The gallant sergeant in question, George Roller, is a brother of W. E., the old Surrey cricketer. A life like painting of his, showing W. E. leav ing the Oval pavilion to take bis place at the wicket is familiar to every member of the Surrey County C.C. W h e n Hayward began his second innings yesterday (Wednesday) for Surrey against Sussex at the Oval he required 164 runs to make up the 1,000. He played such a splendid game that there seemed a possibility that he would accomplish the feat, but when within only 18 runs of his object he was out. If Surrey wins the toss to-day against Gloucestershire he will have another chance to make his thousandth run before the end of the month. T h e following are some of the latest hundreds:— M AY .
