Cricket 1900

166 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 31, 1900. HAMPSHIRE v. SOMERSET. Played at Bath on May 24, 25 and 26. Somerset won by seven wickets. Two notable players re-appeared in first-class cricket in this match, viz., Captain Wynyard and Mr. L. C. H. Palairet. The former played such magnificent cricket, that his batting placed that of the rest o f his side absolutely in the shade. In the first innings, when the wicket was very difficult, he scored 38 by excellent cricket, and in the second innings he hit splendidly for a little more than a couple o f hours, and if he had found anyone else able to keep him company for long, Somersetshire might have had to make more runs than they could manage. As it was they lost three wickets in making the 42 runs which were required to win. Their tail gave an excellent account of itself in the first innings, and Tyler bowled admirably in both innings. When fielding in the Hampshire first innings, Mr. W oods dislocated his thumb, but after it had been attended to at the hospital, he appeared at the wicket, goiog in last, and batting with one hand. No play was possible on the first day of the match owing to raio. H am psh ire . First innings. Second innings. Barton, c and b Tyler........... 0 c Bernard,b Tyler 6 C. B righton has only three old colours to rely on. F. S. Grose is the captain and appearances suggest that he will not have a very easy task in completing his team in the evident lack of conspicuous talent. The other two old colours are K. D. R. Morrice and F. J. S. Firmstone. MAY. 24. Brighton, v. Inter-House Challenge Cup (first round)* JUNE. 2. Brighton, v. Dulwich College 4. Brighton, v. Old Carthusians 7. Brighton, v. Dolphinst 12. The C lifton eleven ought to be pretty strong this year with six old choices as well as eight of the second eleven of 1899 left. The chief needs are a fast bowler and a wicket-keeper. G. J. Hanson bids fair to be useful behind the sticks. C. E. M. Jones is a promising medium pace, and E. Magniac a useful slow bowler. MAY. 16. Clifton, v. Keble College, Oxford 22. Clifton, v.
