Cricket 1900

162 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 31, 1900 head master by which he was engaged at Lord’s. It was some tin e before he made such a decided mark in the cricket frH that be could be regarded as <ne of the mofct promising players who bad evti appeared for a county, but in 1890 be did remarkably well, and in 1891 be was first in the first-class averages with 129 wickets. Hearne never looked back. To this day he is the mainstay of the bowling in the Middlesex team, and although his detractors say, with a cer tain amount of reason, that he is of very little use except at his own end at Lord's, be has ofter, on favourable wickets, done great performances on o her grounds. If he were not a great bowler, Hearne would undoubtedly have been a great bitsman. Once or twice, wben he has been sent in overnight to play out an over or two and has succeeded in keeping up his wicket, he bas played such a fine game on the following morning that good judges have been surprised at the latent skill which he possesses as a batsman; so surprised that some of them have won dered whether, like Shaw and Morley and other famous bowlers, he does not often contrive to get out without giving him self away when runs are not required by his side. As a batsman be is an immente favourite with the crowd, for although his stay at the wickets is as a rule only a short one, he often makes a few hits which bring down tbe house. In one of the Middlesex matches he had to go in when four runs were required to win. A spectator, who knew Hearne’s play pretty well, remarked : “ Now, if I were the captain of the other side I should, without making any fuss, send a man to deep square leg and tell my bowler to give Jack a ball a bit to the off.” As things turned out the ball was bowled a bit to the off, and it was smacked to deep square leg with a mighty pull. But there was no man to look after it, and the match was won by Middlesex. Of late years Hearne has regularly gone to India during tbe winter to fulfil an engagement with tbe Maharaja of Patiala. He is not overworked there, but, on the contrary, has a very enjoy able time, playing for the Maharaja’s team, scoring a heap of runs, and taking as many wickets as are necessary. W . A. D ear S ir ,— In reporting the incident which occurred in the above match, which appeared in your issue of May 24th, your correspon dent does not quite quote facts. What really happened was this : At the time the batsman was hit, the Brixton Wanderers’ score was 129, or 33 behind Norbury Park’s total, not 60 as the report practically states The last two batsmen had been batting some twenty minutos, their respective scores were 13 and and 15, and the time left for play would have allowed two more overs to be bowled. It was suggested to the Norbury Park captain that one more over should be bowled, as soon as the batsman was fit, after that in progress had been completed (of which there were five balls to go), and he agreed to the suggestion. Stumps were to have been drawn at 6.45, but the game was continued to 6.55. F. P. RIDER, Brixton Wanderers C.C. (Captain.) [Mr. Rider’s letter mak* s it clear that Norbury Park really gained time instead of losing it.— E d .] BLACKHEATH.v. BE XLEY .—Played at Bexl-y on May 19. B l a c k b e a i h . H.
