Cricket 1900

M ay 24, 1900 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 None of them really settled down, with the exception o f Storer, who played a skilful innings of 73, shewing great patience on the whole, but hitting very hard at times. Runs came with difficulty until Yorkshire went in, when in an hour and a half they put on 113 for the loss of a wicket, so tLat when stumps were drawn they were only 62 runs beh'nd, with nine wickets in hand, but little p’ay was possible on Tuesday. Brown and Denton played tine cricket, and when rain at one o’clock put an end to piny for the day, the Derbyshire total had been exceeded by 6 runs. Washington played a good innings yesterday and Lord Hawke was able to declare, but rain interrupted play considerably and eventually the game was abandoned. D e r b y sh ir e . L. G. It would le difficut to say which of the M.C.C. teams playing at the beginn ng of the week at Cam bridge and B»th was the weaker. One hardly knows whtre io look for a bowler among the names of the team which went 1o Bath, but Cranfield, who was p'aying against his own county, was fairly success ful. The Somersetshire team itself was pretty weak, and Tyler went in very early. Mr. Bernard and Robson wore down what bowling there was, and Mr. W oods, Gill and Grant hit with the great* st freedom afterwards. The innings last* d all the first day, and after playing under great difficulties as to weather on Tuesday, it was decided to consider the match as drawn. S om erset . F. Taylor, b Hand ford 10 C.A. Notts won by an innings and 20 runs. When a county is down on its luck it need not hope that the weather will come to its assistance; on the contrary, if the weather makes any difference to a wicket, the side which n the mo e out of Iuck generally suffers. Leicestershire men, therefore, were d mbtless able to take their defeat by Notts with equanimity, for although on the first innings they were not half so badly situated as some other counties at the same moment, the rain did not bring about a drawn game, as in the case of more fortunate sides. The feature of the match was the brilliant batting of Mr. A . O. Jones, who scored 155 in three hours and a quarter, with the wicket in various conditions - good and tad. L e ic e ste r sh ir e .
