A FOURTH INNINGS OF O VB ll A HUNDRED BY H A YW A R D . Played at Leicester on May 14, 15, and 16. Surrey won by an innings and 149 runs. The feature of this match was the brilliant batting of Hayward, who so far this year has been in such great form that one is reminded of W . G. in his very best days. A t ihe close of the first day’s play he was not out 167, and on the following morning he was within easy reach of his second hundred before he was disposed of. His remarkable innings of 193 was put together in four hours and three quarters, and included two sixes and a fiv^, which is quite up to present Lord’s form. It was a good idea of Mr. Jephson'8 to send Mr. Crawford in first, for when a young batsman is down on his luck it is not calculated to improve his chances of playing a good innings by pondering in the pavilion over the hundred and one ways in which a batsman may get out At any rate, the policy o f putting him in first was attended with the happiest result*, f.»r he soon settled down, and played exc°llent cricket in the course of his stay at the wic'<ets of about a couple of hours-during his partnership with Lockwood, who also was in fine form, 97 runs were put on. When stumps were drawn Surrey h id scored 369 for five wickets, Mr. Jephson being not out 36, a score which he increased by 18 on the following morning. As L ‘ es and Wood were in luck’s way they added considerably to the total, and the innings came to a conclusion before lunch. Leicebtershire had now an unprofitable task before them. Mr. Wood followed up his fine innings against Warwickshire by scorirg 63 and, iu the follow-on, 61, and in the second inniogs Mr. De Trafforl played a pretty innings, but ihe side was too greatly handicapped by the big store m*de by Surrey to have any heart in it. » ichardson was in 8 ich excellent form iu the first innings that Surrey men Vepan to have hopes that he is not yet at all played out.
