The best of the new players at U ppin g h a m are Carr and Ross, who can both bat and bowl, Adie, a bowler, Franklin Smith, wicket-keeper, and Coverley and Blew, bats men. Eight vacancies will have to be filled up, as A. C. Von Ernsthausen, G. C. Sanders and L. Livesey alone remain of last year’s eleven. M AY. 18. v. Baron O. von Emsthausen’s X I. 25. v. Henderson, the wicket-keeper, is the only other survivor of 1899. Fortunately, eight of the second eleven are left, and of these, four are not unpromising bowlers. MAY. v. Masters v. Though W inch ester has only four of its eleven of 1899 left, there seems every hope of a good season. Pawson, the twelfth man, is available, and there is no lack of rising talent. Last year Winchester were a better side than they appeared on paper. Oddly enough, it was their fielding that was faulty, missed catches, at all events, con tributed to some of their most important defeats. This they will naturally remedy as far as they can.
